Design notes: A triptych of women, the state of their uniforms reflecting
the depth and longevity of their attachment to their places (the central
figure seems to be evolving into Empress Marie-Theresa) are contained
in phone switching unit connected by cables and a single ladder to the
city above. The men who oversee their work watch from umpire's chairs
or pace the narrow walkways which once connected a myriad of now destroyed
or absent similar units. But with the introduction of the Strowger Automated
Switching Unit (between Acts 1 and 2) all is blown away and this strange
and inscrutable piece of modern technology dominates an almost empty stage.
