About the Club

The Ilkeston and District Motor Cycle and Car Club is one of the oldest motor clubs in the country. It was started in the 1920's as the Ilkeston and District Motor Cycle and Light Car Club with the majority of members being mobile on either two or three wheels.

It has been a member of the East Midlands Section of the Auto Cycle Union (ACU) since earliest (Club) memory.

During its formative years the club organised a variety of motoring competitions in differing formats, these included:

· Motor cycle Scrambles,
· off road bike trials,
· main-road rallies,
· main-road tours.

The off-road events being for motor cycles and/or motor cycle combinations. These off-road events were run with a serious sporting agenda, while the main road events were of a more social nature with any vehicle usually able to compete. Even here a 'Social Championship' has been the order of the day with points won on the 'rallies' counting towards a yearly prize.

During the pre (and early post) - second World War period, "ILKANDIS" was the premier motorcycle club in Derbyshire and is still the custodian of the Derbyshire Grand National Cup.

During the War years and the early post war period, with petrol rationed, off road events were still organised but using pedal power as the motive force.

In the mid 1950's a series of financial problems caused the club to move away from the Scramble scene and concentrate on off-road trials and main road rallies. The pattern of club activity continued until the dwindling number of trial entries and the sudden loss of a trials' venue caused the secession of the clubs active involvement in the trials scene during the mid 1990's.

The word 'Light' was dropped from the Club name in the mid '70's. This was to bring the Club more into line with more modern vehicle design practices.

The Current Club

We undertake a rally season with 8 events. These include one off-road driving test and one night rally. The events (with the exception of the driving test) are run to a format similar to that of the old RAC 12-car rally but with a normally lower average speed. These events are traditionally navigational trials of route-sheet, map or pictorial formats, although these are presented in many different ways. More details can be found in the "Events" section of the website.

The club meets socially on a Monday night from 9 p.m. at the Bull's Head Inn on Stanton Road in Ilkeston.
