The Ilkandis Badge and Crest

This is my interpretation (Steve Herod) of the symbolism involved the ILKANDIS club badge, since I am unaware of any records relating to it I have had to deduce or guess most of the meanings, so I apologies if they are wrong!

Crest

The ILKANDIS club badge is based on a combination of the ‘Arms of the Borough of Ilkeston' and the ‘Auto Cycle Union' badge or crest of that era

An extract from ‘The Ilkeston and District Local History Society'

Ilkeston Emblem

The Society emblem, formerly the arms of the Borough of Ilkeston.

Granted to the Ilkeston Borough Council in 1887, the arms represent the industries which were most prominent in the area at that time.

The bear holds in its mouth a miner's safety lamp to represent the coal industry.

Across the top of the shield we see a sample of lace while at top and bottom are two hanks of cotton, both representing two aspects of the textile industry.

To left and right we have two gloves, another of the local industries, while at centre the symbol of Mars represents the iron industry.

Wheel
The wheel would originally been a cart wheel but has been updated to represent motorcycles and was used as part of the ACU symbol

The Crest

(What appears above the helmet)

Bears Head

The crest is a bears head ‘couped' or cut.

The bear stands for Strength, cunning, ferocity in the protection of one's kindred. I don't know what the distinction of it being cut is ?

(It may be dissolved and not cut again I'm not sure about the meaning of that)

Lamp

The lamp in the bears mouth is most likely a Davy's safety lamp

In Heraldic terms they represent Light, life, and spirituality – or in our case mining.

Rope
The wreath or torse is a rope in 6 parts of 2 alternating colours Silver or White for Peace and sincerity and black for Constancy or grief

The Helm

Helm

I think this probably represents courage.

The Shield

Sheild

The banner is Blue (Azure) representing Truth and loyalty

The saltire or cross emblem can represents a stile or may be derived from a flag

Saltire

Although this symbol is indicative of iron the four points are highlighted, possibly to represent the points of a compass

Wings & Mantling

Wings
Mantle

The wings make up part of the mantling and are thought to originate from the ACU though I can find no reference to them

Sky

Lines and ordinaries usually denote a geographical feature such as sea or sky, ours denotes the scalloped edging of lace which the area is know for. The shield also contains the skanes of cotton and gloves pertaining to laocal industries

Glove

The Banner

Containing the motto ‘Labor Omnia Vincit' meaning ‘Labor overcomes all difficulties' or ‘Labor Conquers All Things' or ‘Work Conquers Everything' and has been used by several people and organizations.
