This is a system or tool for teaching basic English Grammar. It is based upon a set of hand positions known as grammimes (grammar - mime). Each part of speech has an associated hand gesture which may be seen by students to clearly indicate its part of speech and is easily imitated. Each hand gesture is capable of some refinement so that common and proper nouns, and the tense of verbs, for example, may be identified. The use of such a gesture led system offers a greater freedom to the teaching and assessment of grammar. It allows an immediacy of response so that simple games may be employed to reinforce the student's understanding without turning to paper and pencil methods.

Once the student has gained an understanding of the part of speech taught a written coding system may be used which links directly with each gesture. A simple recall of the grammime will allow the student to correctly indicate the part of speech for words within given texts, or his own writing. The symbols can be written under text to demonstrate the student's understanding and allow critical assessment to be made away from the classroom.

This site is intended to give the teacher sufficient understanding of this method to stand before a class and try it out. It is intended to offer an enjoyable and simple introduction to English Grammar

Each button will take you to an introduction to one of the the nine parts of speech. From there you can access a range of games and activities which, alongside the use of the grammime and written code, will present all that is required to use the system within the classroom.
