Move over

 

It is important for the students to appreciate that the adverb may be placed in a number of different positions within a sentence. In this activity choose five students to make a line at the front of the class. Each student has responsibility for a different part of speech and should hold the appropriate grammime in front of himself. The group, first of all, create a sensible sentence and then the student who has responsibility for the adverb is allowed to move position to find a new arrangement which still makes sensse.

 Initial position: (Article) (Adjective) (Noun) (Adverb) (Verb)

1st suggestion: The grey cat SLOWLY walked.

2nd suggestion: SLOWLY the grey cat walked.

3rd suggestion: The grey cat walked SLOWLY

 

This activity could be made more demanding by increasing the complexity of the sentence.

 

The grey cat SLOWLY walked along the alley
