Football in Ipswich
Ipswich Town
In 1878 the Ipswich Association Football Club was formed, it was not until 1936 that the club turned professional, Ipswich Town were elected to the league in 1938 my picture of the ground believed to be from that first league season shows what is thought to be the match v Colchester (attd 23,890).
There are two other clubs in the town playing in the Ridgeons league which will also be featured here, Ipswich Wanderers and Whitton United
Ipswich Wanderers
Ipswich Wanderers founded in 1980 as an under 14's boys team and joining the Ipswich Sunday League in 1982, five years later joining the new Eastern Counties League Division 1. The club achieved Premier League status in season 1997/98, becoming champions of Division One, losing only three league games all season. Relegation back to Division 1 on the last day of the 2002/03 season saw former Ipswich and Tottenham player Jason Dozzell appointed in his first coaching post the following season (2003/04) and 1 year later promotion back to the Premier Division where they are still playing.
Whitton United
Whitton United formed 1926, currently playing in Ridgeons div1 and looking to move to a new ground after many years at the King George V ground.
Other local teams
One of the postcards in my collection contains a picture of a very early football team, written on the back of the card is the description "Ipswich Tramways football team 1904-05". I have not yet been able to check this information, any details are welcome.
