International Sport in Ipswich

 

Over the years Ipswich has hosted a variety of International sporting events including

 

Cycling

Milk Race 1983, stage 4 26/5/83 which saw the riders race from Harlow to Ipswich (88 miles) and then in the evening take part in a 20 mile criterium around town centre. The teams included GB professionals (Sean Yates), Ireland (Paul Kimmage), France, Czechoslovakia, USA and West Germany.

Milk Race 1985, stage 4 30/5/85 Chelmsford to Ipswich (70 miles) plus a 25 mile Ipswich town centre criterium, with a similar array of teams, although this time including the Soviet Union (Toomas Kirsipu, Sergei Voronin).

Michelin 1988 city centre championship, 23/6/88 featuring GB riders

The town has regularly hosted rounds of the cyclo cross trophy, with the events held around Foxhall Stadium, Alexandra Park and most recently Chantry Park. The senior race often being won by riders from Belgium or the Netherlands.

Table tennis

1988 England v China (mens), 28/10/88 at the Corn Exchange, China winning 4 matches to 2, the England team containing Alan Cook & Carl Prean.

1995 Engalnd v Belgium (womens), 17/1/95 at the Corn Exchange, England winning 4-1 which finally saw an English side win in Ipswich at the sixth attempt over a 20 year period. The match saw England win 8-4 on aggregate and avoid relegation from the European super league.

Hockey

1972 GB v France (mens), 24/6/72 at Portman Road, GB won 2-0. The match was a warm up for both teams for the Munich Olympics.

Indoor Cricket

1998 19/9/98 Henley Road cricket centre, England v S Africa mens veterans indoor cricket test match

1999 18/11/99 at Henley Road, England v Australia (mens & womens), featuring Asif Din & Damien D'Olivera for England and the results as usual an Australian win in both matches.

Moto-Ball

1969 at Martlesham Heath sports field 26/5/69, Ipswich Triangle v Leverkusen MSC (W Germany), a rare sport which dated back to the 1920's and played in 1969 with a 15 inch ball and with riders on 250cc motor bikes, with a goalie using a lightweight machine. The Ipswich team featured Fred Cotton, Eric & Barry Yallop.

American Football

1991 at Northgate Sports Centre, Ipswich cardinals were thrashed by the French Argonautes from Aix in the 2nd round of the Euro Bowl 51-0.

Fencing

1987 at Northgate Sports Centre, 7-8/11/87 International Ladies Epee Cup the second year the event was held in the town. The winner Sophie Morrisee (Fra) defeating Brigitte Benon (Fra) in the final 8-6.
