I have recently been able to study the various works cited by John Guillim in his Display of Heraldry, at the excellent British Library in London. I was interested to note how closely Guillim's text was related to that of his source materials; and that even his illustations were sometimes identical to the examples chosen by earlier authors. Even if much of Guillim's book is not original it must be noted that he freely credits the other writers whom he quotes. What does, however, remain unique in Guillim's work is his methodical and ordered approach to the subject.
