During the seventies she was President of the Goole Water-Tower Film Vault, home of the VUE Commission's film-archive. Biography 27 of THE FALLS demonstrated the enigma of three women, or was it the same woman three times at three stages of her life? Proposed subject of a nine-part television series entitled FEAR OF DROWNING. A Cissie Colpitts appeared in SLOW BURNING.
Ian W. Hill, an overseas VFI research scholar, believes she will die at the age of 92, a grand old lady, in a cinema in Philadelphia, quietly haemorrhaging into a crimson-plush seat while watching Renoir's 'Boudu Sauve des Eaux', still interested in drowning.

Peter Greenaway
This is believed to be a typing error for Tulse Luper that has insinuated itself irredeemably into this glossary.

IRR
Institute of Reclamation and Restoration. A last minute entry into the Glossary. No further details are as yet available.

Ernst B. Konnick
Details of Konnick supplied by Nigel Harris, VFI Japan.
Ernst was born and spent most of his life in communist Czechoslovakia. Because of this he has a distrust of authority, particularly the VFI. As a boy Ernst was a passionate collector of rocks, minerals and fossils, a hobby which almost caused the collapse of his family home in Prague. After graduating in Geology he joined the shadowy Institute of Morphology. It is rumoured (but denied by Ernst) that he was a double agent during the closing years of the cold war. He first became interested in Tulse Luper after reading an article by him in The Hydrology Review concerning water tracing in limestone regions. This fascinated Ernst because of the ambiguity of the article - was it pure research or land art? After taking part in the velvet revolution he moved to Australia with his wife Anais (a trapeze artist) and his son Fritz. Konnick is currently employed as Director of VFI Australia.

John L*****

Sandra Lean
UK VFI scholar and persistent dreamer-of-water, Category One, Water Flight, which is nearly always identified with the Befordshire Level Sequence from H. E. Carter's film The Last Wave. Numerous articles to her credit. See, for example, Rhymes.

Lephrenic
A stiff-necked, patronising academic. Thought to have appeared in VERTICAL FEATURES.

GangLion (aka Gang Lion)
Between 1968 and 1974 GangLion was a super-insect who featured in a series of 800 ink drawings. He was to be the subject of 26 adventures in metamorphosis but instead became one of the academics associated with Tulse Luper. During the mid-seventies he wears a trench coat and becomes a schemer and a pimp. By 1978 he had become a chain-smoking, pompous buffoon. By 1980 he was an aeronautical engineer. Introduced Tulse Luper to Cisse Colpitts.

Lully
Appears in ROSA
LINK: Lully was the favourite composer of Louis 14th who died after stubbing his foot with a heavy cane while beating time during a rehearsal at the opera house in Versailles.

Tulse Luper
Originally over 68 years of age. Persecuted in the 1930s, disappeared into a series of ever-more obscure prisons. Lover and sometime wife is, or was, Cissie Colpitts. Genetic history: his inventiveness and ability to tell stories derives from John Cage; his stamina and loquaciousness from Buckminster Fuller; mystery and provocativeness from Marcel Duchamp. Other traits derive from PG's father and Sacha Vierny. Appearance: known to sport a hat and pipe, sometimes a shotgun and motor-cycle. Madgett in DROWNING BY NUMBERS is regarded as a plumper and more combative version. Introduced in VERTICAL FEATURES REMAKE. Important character in A WALK THROUGH H. Production Advisor for THE FALLS. The academics of the IRR sought to discredit him by too much homage.
Author of: 'Tulse Luper and the Centre Walk', a collage-book where biography is reduced to diagrams (this may in fact be by Shey Fallenby who spent some time pretending to be Luper); 'Some Migratory Birds of the Northern Hemisphere' - an ornithological classic; at least four short stories, 'The Cassowary', 'Sparrow-Week', 'The Photographer's Dog', and 'Quadruple Fruit'.
Notable features: Hanging from his bathroom are two ventilator fans operated by four hanging toggles which, when set in rotary motion, create a turbulence of air that could be said to represent the turbulence of outer space. Luper is known to communicate through his bathroom's hot-water radiator.

Paul Melia
Pernicous inclusion of fictional character. Criminal charges are pending.

Eliza Poklewski-Koziell
Extract from an interview filed by Kate Sampson.
The story of how I came to work for Greenaway is a classic case of right place, right time, for I had no film associations other than a wistful desire to work in the industry. A friend of Greenaway's assistant told me that he needed someone to type up scripts, but no sooner had I started than it transpired his assistant was leaving. I was terrified of meeting Peter, particularly since I had just seen his film Prospero's Books and I stumbled through an informal interview not really knowing what to say, but he emerged as a charming and completely dynamic person.
It rankles me when people ask me if I am Peter's secretary.... I have many different hats - one minutes I'm off researching, the next I am acting as Peter's commerical agent. I am also the archivist for his stills. At other times I will have an enormous typing load, weeks and weeks of updating film scripts that Peter has scribbled over....
In a few months I will go freelance because after six years I want a bit of freedom, but I will still be very involved in Peter's work.
