...... The Tinnitus Theme

Sandra Lean offers these notes on Bewick Fallcaster's 92 variations on the tinnitus theme

The VUE Commission has established that while B. Fallcaster was in Budapest he described an incipient VUE tinnitus to a radio-engineer who attempted to convey the nature of the condition by making various experimental tape-recordings. To mask the insistent repetitious sound which never left him, Bewick composed 92 variations on a tinnitus theme.

Bedrich Smetana (born Litomysel 1824; died Prague, 1884), regarded by some to be the founder of Czech music, wrote his E minor string quartet - subtitled 'From my Life' - in 1876 during the onset of deafness, the result of VD. Pressure on the auditory nerve made him hear a constant drone on a high E; he memorialised his tinnitus in the string quartet by having the violin play a persistent high E.
Schumann also suffered from tinnitus; during his last years he heard a constant A-flat.
