MGF DIY - Front Fog Lights

Updates:

  1. 5th November  2000  - The whole Page

The Reason:

Front of the car looked a bit plain, so decided to add the Rover Fog lamps.

The Idea:

Buy the Parts, fit and use.  Since this involved removing the front bumper, I thought it was time to paint the Splitter.

The Parts:

  1. Rover Front Fog light kit £190 +Vat
  2. Rover Fog lens Protectors £23 +Vat
  3. Paint

The Process:

Buy the kit, and check all parts are included.

Go back to the dealer and collect a set of cutting templates.  These are supposed to be included in the kit, but for some reason my kit was missing them.  However the dealer somehow had a spare set sitting around which they let me have.

Take a final view of the car before you start.

Then remove the front indicators, and if you have a splitter, remove this also.  The position the cutting templates in place.

Using a suitable marker for the colour of your car, i.e. one that shows up.  Mark the front holes, and the four lower mounting holes.

Next remove the templates and the front bumper.   Not as easy as it sounds.

While working on the car, measure and mark the point on the  bulkhead where the wiring loom will go.

Bulkhead prior to hole.

Then after measuring and re-measuring drill the pilot hole and then using a 25mm hole cutter, cut the hole for the loom.

Now leave the car alone, and go take the bumper into somewhere where you can work on it without it getting scratched.

Using the previously marked lines, cut the two holes.

Try the trim pieces and file back the holes until they fit easily.

If like me you decide to paint the trim then do it now,  as I did, and also in my case the splitter.

While one or other coats of paint is drying, drill the four holes in the bottom of the Bumper, these are used to mount the fog lamp brackets.  If as me you are going to use the Lens protectors, then ensure you make the holes as slots.

At this point, you might suddenly realise what the odd cut outs in your splitter are for.  However what isn't marked or identified is that you will need to drill the equivalent hole in the fog lamp bracket.  Otherwise you will end up wondering why you can't fit the screws later (as I did DOH )

The Result:

Much nicer looking front,  stands out a bit more.  You either like the silver or not.  I do.
