Our Place In The Sun

In this scene we find 'The Lover' talking to Nancy, responding to her suggestion that they move in together and start building a new home and a new life. Nancy has finally decided to put 'prostitution' behind her and have a monogamous relationship with the man whom she really loves and wants to be with. What starts out well however quickly deteriorates because they don't have firm foundations in their relationship to hold this together for very long. They try to build this new life simply on both of them working all hours to buy the things they want in a way to find true happiness and fulfillment. However, it is a 'false dawn' because the past is never far behind them. Nancy used to make a lot of money as a prostitute. Both she and her Lover soon discover that they can't easily make the same money. The song tells us about the "falling" as they slide into the prison of debt and the constant worry and depression that engulfs them as they try desperately to climb out of this financial hole. The message of the song is that true happiness and fullfillment comes from loving and being loved and that there is far more to life than simply chasing material wealth, which can so easily slip through our fingers. The strain on the relationship is seen as we continue through this chapter...
