And He Cries

After a night out drinking heavily, 'The Lover' returns home. The song describes Nancy's fear, knowing what often happens when he is drunk, feeling low and is particularly angry. The violence that follows we are told has become a regular occurence. We then get an insight into what both Nancy and the Lover are feeling as the domestic violence takes hold. Also, for the first and only time there is made mention of a "butterfly". Clearly this is a defining moment in the lives of Nancy and her Lover, and although this is the last time that the Lover is violent towards Nancy, the breakup of their relationship is now taking place. Notice how the song makes sad mention of their children at the end...
