The Reason
Her Lover has done some thinking - He has now made some important decisions and is now ready to make the kind of commitment to Nancy that she needs. He is changing for the better too and has experienced some 'inner healing' for himself. He recognises that there is still some way to go, but that they are now both on their way towards 'the prize' (or "The Promised Land" he keeps singing about !). The 'chains ' are coming off, the prison doors which have held him back are opening because he has finally found it in his heart to forgive Nancy for all the hurt, the pain and the rejection that he experienced when she was a 'prostitute '. Indeed, the 'key ' to unlocking the prison doors in his life was clearly labelled 'forgiveness '. His past is not necessarily forgotten but he is learning to forgive and all those painful memories can now begin to 'rest in peace '. He knows now that he can start to move forward again (this time in the right direction) with Nancy by his side. The key phrase of the song is "Baby can't you see I'm still in love with you..? " His ability to say "I love you " to Nancy marks another important landmark in their relationship and together they are beginning to scale new heights...
