Ecuador: Tandayapa Valley Trip Report

Introduction:
This was my first trip to the Neotropical region. We stayed at Tandayapa for the duration of the trip, taking day trips to surrounding areas with the Tandayapa Bird Lodge Guides, who also provided transport.
Many of the bird species were very difficult to identify for the first few days, but after a week or so, identification became slightly easier. The whole area was extremely rich with wildlife, most were species that I had no previous experience of.
This report should be of use to anyone planning a visit to the area, and considering visiting the Tandayapa area during the trip.
General information:
Flight: We flied with KLM from Stansted via Amsterdam. The return flight cost around £650, and the journey was about 20 hours.
Transport: Tandayapa Bird Lodge arranged All transport within Ecuador. This turned out to be a good choice as driving in Ecuador looked very stressful with some very erratic driving and potholed roads.
Tandayapa Bird Lodge is about 90 mins. From Quito Airport.
Accommodation: Tandayapa Bird Lodge was very pleasant, set right in the heart of Primary Cloud Forest. Food and rooms were fine.
Getting by in Ecuador: We were based in the Lodge for the stay, and had an English speaking guide for most of the holiday. This made the trip very easy with no requirement for speaking Spanish etc. Otherwise, knowledge of Spanish would have been essential.
Rumours abounded of widespread robbery in the area in the media before our visit, but these proved to be unfounded. The Locals were very friendly.

The Birds:
This section contains a list of all species seen during the trip.
Most of the birdwatching was in Cloud forest, and as a result, most species were very difficult to find and identify.
The majority of birds fell into one of two categories: Either high up in the Forest canopy, or skulking deep in the forest undergrowth. As a result, many species were heard but not seen. The remaining species were, however, seen fairly well at least once on the trip, usually with a bit of luck, and help from the guides.
