THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS

DAVID CALVERT-SMITH QC

David Calvert-Smith QC, who was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions in November 1998. Born in 1945, David Calvert-Smith was educated at Eton College and King's College Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1969 and became a QC in 1997. He was Chairman of the Bar Council until taking up his present post. He lives in London and is married with two adult children.

David Calvert-Smith began his career in private practice specialising in criminal law.

He began specialising in prosecution work in 1986 when he became Junior

Treasury Counsel. He became First Senior Treasury Counsel from 1995 - 1997.

He has regularly prosecuted homicide and terrorist cases - as well as organised

crime and fraud. He has also served as a Recorder in the Crown Court

and was a distinguished Chairman of the Education and Training Committee

of the Bar Council.
