THE TOUGH JUSTICE WEBSITE - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Where is Beattie now and what is he doing?

George came out of jail - yet again - in December 1996. He had been taken in again two months earlier for a reason the Scottish Office will still not disclose. He had lost his Public service Vehicle licence when he was taken back into jail in 1992, but he passed the test again in 1997 and he is now working as a bus driver in the South of England. He moved South again because of the pack of newspaper reporters that followed his every move in Carluke.

What is happening to Lewis Johnston?

Nothing.
Johnston lives with his wife and daughter in a beautiful little town called Helensburgh, about an hour north of Glasgow.

Who is most responsible in the Scottish Office?

The Secretary of State is currently Donald Dewar - and he may well become the head of the new Scottish Assembly that is to be set up. But Dewar has so far had nothing to do with the Beattie case. The Secretaries of State most responsible in the past have been George Younger, Ian Lang and Michael Forsythe. However, the leading civil servant - the man who might have given most cooperation in clearing Beattie, but who has not - is a Mr. Duncan Lowe. It was Mr. Lowe who in 1987 refused to disclose the serology document that eventually led to Beattie's case being sent back to the Court of Appeal in 1994, by which time many of the main witnesses had died.

What happened to William Muncie?

He got the job of Assistant Chief Constable after his success in jailing Beattie. After the "Rough Justice" programme, he threatened to sue the "Rough Justice" producer - but then forgot to do so. In the mid eighties he retired. He died a few years ago.

What is current in Beattie's case?

A petition is being prepared citing incompetence of attorney at his trial as reason for another appeal.
