Interviewer-Clive Warren
Clive: Congratulations on the success of the past couple of singles
All: Thankyou
Clive: You've got a huge fanbase haven't you?
Andrea: Yeah (laughs)
Clive: Take it from me, you have
Jim: I suppose it's just spread by word of mouth really. We did sell an awful
lot of albums, on our first album here without having had a hit single and thankfully
we're having a hit single now with Dreams. We're No. 6 in the English charts, so
we're selling lots and lots of albums.
Clive: Yeah, how did you feel when you're single went in at No.6?
Caroline: At last! Y'know 'cos we had singles before that, so we were hoping,
eh, that Dreams would do well and it did, so we're happy, y'know
Clive: What's it like being all brothers and sisters?
Caroline: It's terrible
Clive: ARRGGHH!
Andrea: It's em.....we're very used to it, we're doing this eight years now and
y'know, when you know the reason you're doin' something is not because you're family, it's
because each of us individually love music, love playing, love writing together, and
it's a fantastic chance to write your own music and travel around the world and play to
people. So, I think if we had come at it from individual bases, we'd be doing
this anyway....so with that in mind we work the family thing well, we try not to fight too
much
Clive: Yeah, but there must be fights
Sharon: No!
Jim: Of course there are fights
Clive: No, there's got to be...me and my brother even now...we still fight about
things, trivial things...it's usually the more trivial anyway in family relationships so
what's it like for you? I mean you spend all your time together
Andrea: Well it is trivial things, it's general irritation, like if somebody
presses a lift button and you've already pressed it, it's like"I already pressed
that!"....and there's..."oooh" irritation, tiredness, but 'em...bigger
fights, I don't think we have the energy for at the moment
Clive: What was the last fight you think you had?
Andrea: Gosh, I don't know...we're doin' pretty well at the moment
Sharon: I don't know what it was...can't remember
Clive: Do you actually spend time apart. Do you actually say 'right that's
it, we're having a break from one another'?
Sharon: When we're not working, we're apart
Jim: Where do you normally like to go?
Sharon: Home
Jim: Which is where?
Sharon: Ireland
Jim:Yeah...whereabouts
Sharon: Oh...em...it's all over for all of us...we're spread about
Jim: Dundalk mainly...we're from Dundalk
Clive: Yeah, what's Dundalk like?
Jim: It's a small....well actually, it's a large town. It's the largest town
in Ireland...eh..population about 35,000 people, it's got mountains, sea, lots of nice
people...eh...
Andrea: Loads of pubs
Social life is completely....eh..is pubs....that's about it
Clive: And what's' the peoples reaction like to you now that you've had all this
success?
Jim: Em....it's..y'know it's funny, we're never treated any differently
because they know us so well but they're so proud, y'know, you see it in their faces when
they come up and say y'know congratulations on all our success and they're delighted that
I suppose, we're putting a positive spotlight on our hometown
Clive: Which is good, do you find though, that they help keep your feet on the
ground. You can go there and actually unwind and forget about the showbiz side of
things
Sharon: Yeah, definitely, I mean you can just really relax and end up in the pub
that you usta drink in years ago and it's just like it usta be, so yeah, you can.
Clive: Now you've brought a drum in...what do you call one of those?
Caroline: It's a bodhran
Clive: A bodhran?
Caroline: Yes
Clive: Ok, who plays the bodhran? Is that Caroline, is that yours?
Caroline: It's my job
Clive: It's your job in the band..I noticed on Top Of the Pops by the way, that
because your playing the drums, you're the only one who can' flick their hair
Caroline: Exactly, yeah
Clive: Do you feel a bit left out by that?
Sharon: Yeah, I'm a girl and I need to be able to flick my hair every so often but
I can't when I'm playing
Clive: Even Jim flicks his hair!
Jim: It's a girls prerogative!
Clive: We're gonna give this drum away later aren't we?
Caroline: Aha
Clive: We are aren't we?
Sharon: Yes we are...sorry I was drinking water
Clive: Alright...the Corrs are with us on Radio 1 this morning
Dreams plays from a CD
Clive: the Corrs and Dreams on Radio 1 and they are my live studio guests here this
morning on Radio 1. And eh..we've got this drum that we are gonna give away...so can
we have a little bang on the drum please Caroline? That is your job really isn't it
Caroline: Are you sure about his?
Clive: Now you did say that this is not as good as the one you use in the band
Caroline: No, this is for promotional use, you can get them everywhere
Jim: Yeah the poor listeners ...the poor winners of this competition are
getting a duff drum
Caroline: Excuse me can I speak here!
Clive: Another fight!
Caroline: This is good because it's got our name on it kind of a logo on it and
it's signed by us, it's an exclusive!
Clive: Oh absolutely....and you're gonna play it now...so give 'us a quick tune
Caroline: Nobody'll want it now
She plays for a few seconds
Clive: Is that all you have to do?
All: You try it!
Clive:Right OK...hang on pass it round.
Sharon: We'll bring in the violin next week
Clive: Here we go are you ready...drum an' no bass
He plays amid groans from the girls
Jim: You suck!
Clive: Can I be on the next album? So we're gonna give this away and eh, I
thought that the question that we would do, we'll make this a write in competition (Gives
address) We'll ask this very simple question so don't give the answer away, who did
the original version of Dreams?
Sharon: That's a toughie!! (laughs)
Jim: My God!
Clive: There we are, that'll get us another good response, you'll probably have to
be over 35 to remember that band
Jim: And it wasn't Led Zeppelin
Sharon: Was it Roy Orbison?
Clive: It wasn't who?
Sharon: Roy Orbison
Jim: Led Zeppelin
Clive: It wasn't Roy Orbison and it wasn't Led Zeppelin, you're absolutely right
jim: Was it Karen Carpenter?
Clive: Andrea!
Andrea: Yes
Clive: You were in the Commitments
Andrea: Yep
Clive: Tell us more
Andrea: Em...yeah, that was when we started the band in 1990, we all auditioned.
Alan Parker came to town y'know and everybody who could tap their foot in Ireland
arrived at the door to audition, so of course we heard about it and off we went 'the
family band!' and em...we played for the first time on stage for Alan Parker and we
were pretty cool
Sharon: ..Pretty terrible
Clive: For anybody who was thinking of going down to Blockbuster or whatever
this weekend...where are you in the film?
Andrea: Ok...I am at the beginning of it when they are doin' auditioning
scenes, I am Jimmy Rabittes sister, I've got a big head of hair eh....curly mop and I say
a few rude lines like 'go and something'
Caroline: bleep
Andrea: And then I say another thing like ' five minutes Jimmy and you'll have to
go' I'm at the Xtravision and that's as much as I wanna say now
Clive: And of course you were in Evita as well....which bit were you in Evita?
Andrea: Ok I'm in the bed in Evita, I'm em...the mistress of Peron and
basically the scene is when Madonna walks into the room and sings 'hello and goodbye' and
kicks this young girl out of his bed. And then I have a suitcase and another mop of
hair, which is a wig by the way, and eh, I say, I sing to Jonathan Price 'so what happens
now, so what happens now, where am I going to? where am I going to? And then I
leave, my suitcase in my hand, very sad
Clive: So how comes?.....I'm not being rude here, how comes you got picked for
these and your brothers and sisters didn't get picked?
Caroline: We've got no talent
Clive: Oh, don't put yourself down, now that's not fair. Do you think this is
gonna be a thing that might happen again? Are you gonna make a....be like the Spice
Girls, make a movie at some point?
All: No!
Clive: Never? Acting in any way?
Andrea: Oh, y'know that just came about, I was just kinda lucky, y'know what I
mean..the Commitments...that part was to do with my age and everything like that and then
the mistress was I suppose the youngest in the family so I could look young, 'cos she's
supposed to be about 15. Who knows in the future but what we're doing music, that's
the goal, that's our aim y'know
Clive: You are..I mean I have to say...you are gorgeous...what is with the hair in
the films? Why do they do that to you?
Andrea: No, no they didn't..OK I'll confess! The first one was in 1990
and perms were in fashion...so I had a big bad perm...right OK...big ugly head and the
second one was...I was supposed to...because it's South American, I'm supposed to look
Argentinean or whatever..em..when I auditioned I had longer hair and for the band, I cut
it all up. So when I went back to Alan Parker he went 'your hair!'...so then
somebody stuck this big mop on again so its for continuity between the films
Clive: It's radio 1, our live studio guests are the Corrs
Music plays
Clive: Is this your first time into Radio 1, I think it probably is
Sharon: Very first time
Clive: Yes
Clive: So we're gonna give away this little drum here...it's actually not that
little is it? It's goin' to be a nightmare to send through the post...what did you
say it was called?
Caroline: A bodhran
Clive: bodhran
Caroline: yes
Clive: OK...what we want to know from you is on the usual write in address...who
had the original hit with Dreams, that very difficult question
Jim: Metallica?
Clive: Don't give it away...so get in touch...a lot of people are actually ringing
in saying when can they see you live...are you doing a tour of the UK?
Sharon: Well we're doing the fleadh on 6th...we've already done a tour of the UK
this year and I think we expect to come back before Christmas and do another tour then
so....
Caroline: You can either see us at the fleadh or you can see us before Christmas
Andrea: I'm getting gesticulated...I'm getting it all wrong
Clive: What are they telling you to plug next door?
Andrea: You want me to dance like that!! (Laughs)
Clive: Who is that, that's telling you what to do ??
Andrea: Emma, that's our assistant
Clive: Emma? Is she married?
Sharon: Emma are you married?
Clive: She doesn't realize I could see straight down her top when she was sitting
there
Sharon: Oh...you're terrible
Clive: Sorry...sorry
Sharon: There'll be slaps for that..
Clive: Really?...excellent!
Sharon: No...no..don't!!
Clive: Jim I have to ask you this.....cos working with three other girls, and I
know they're your sisters but please tell us the truth....who takes the longest to get
ready when you are going out?
Jim: The longest? They take turns...sometimes it's Andrea....sometimes
it's Sharon, and sometimes it's Caroline...we all take turns
Clive: Do they argue about things like the colours of lipstick? etc?
Jim: No they share information, that's what they do which I think is healthy
Sharon: We bore people to death by talking about make-up and things like that
All: There's always an argument between Mac and Chanel
Clive: Really?
Caroline: Mac versus Chanel...
Clive: do y'know if you say it again...we'll get loads of freebies
Sharon: Yeah! Mac & Chanel
Andrea: Chanel wins
Jim: We want sponsorship
Clive: When you are out performing, do you all go out to the toilet like girls do?
Sharon: No
Caroline: Oh no
Andrea: Performing?
Caroline: When we are doing what?
Clive: Whenever you are out together, if you are like performing or you've gone out
socially.... Sharon: Oh you mean like girls..they follow each other.. no...we've
never really
Andrea: No, because often we go out together, the table would be like kinda empty
Clive: But that is quality bitchin' time then isn't it?
Andrea: It is quality but......
Clive: We know what goes on in the girls loo's...somebody told me....so we've
established that you are doing the fleadh in Finsbury Park in London but that...before
Christmas more dates...
Sharon: Yes, before Christmas, more dates...
Clive: And you're doin' a gig with Pavarotti
Sharon: Yes, we're doing...It's a charity Gala gig......Stevie Wonder's on it and
Celine Dion and......
Jim: We're gonna perform a song with him and do one of our own aswell
Clive: Where is that?
Sharon: It's in Modena
Jim: Outside Venice in Italy...then we're off to...doin a couple of dates in
Germany..then we're off to tour coast to coast in the States doin' all the fleadhs with
Van Morrison and Sinead O'Connor and lots of other big acts
Clive: I mean this is like all your Christmas's come early isn't it....it's really
happening for you isn't it....do you think that you will get Pavarotti to sing on one of
your tracks?
Sharon: Who knows....U2 did it
Jim: It's a possibility
Clive: What about Stevie Wonder?
Andrea: Love to!...that'd be great
Clive: That would be something special wouldn't it
Andrea: He's the man!
Caroline: That would be fantastic
Clive: I mean how would that happen for you, if he said 'I would like to do it'
would you be up for it, 'cos some artists would say 'no, no, not really'
Andrea: Oh God yes!
Clive: Get Stevie Wonder out of retirement...he hasn't made a record for so
long. Alright, well it's the Corrs who are with us...thankyou very much for coming
in
All: Thankyou
Clive: Nice to see you, good luck with the next single which is called...
All: What Can I Do
Clive: It's on the album...but are you gonna do a remix of it?
Caroline: That's right
Clive: Ok alright...Thankyou very much to the Corrs
All: Thankyou
