THE SHIELD
The town’s shield was devised to represent the many historical connections that the town has and its long history combined with its surroundings. The Bishops Mitre symbolises the association between the Bishops of Lichfield and Eccleshall based at Eccleshall castle which from St Chad’s time was an Ecclesiastical Manor. The embattlements on the shield symbolise the fact that a castle has been here since King John’s reign and has been very important to the life and development of the town. The Stafford Knot symbolises the association with the County Town and the county in which we are situated. The Cannon represents the battle between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers when Cromwell’s Roundheads fired their cannon from the current cricket ground at the castle where King Charles's cavaliers had taken refuge. The Wavy Blue Line represents the River Sow which flows though the town. The Fleur-de-lis stands for trinity, hence Trinity Church our fine parish church. The Green Background represents our countryside. The Five Pointed Symbol represents that Eccleshall is situated at the junction of five roads, five lines of communication. This particular symbol was taken from a half penny token coin dated 1666 found in the front garden of a house in the High Street. * * * * * * * * Many of the town’s organisations use the shield on their letter heading and on posters promoting the town and its historical background. If you are based in the town and would like to use the shield please get in touch with the Parish Council Clerk, Christine Heelis, 42 Badgers Croft, Eccleshall. |
