| APM, Artists'
Perspective Modeler is a software program created by Joe Demarco. Joe
has described it as a mathematical camera, in so much that it uses mathematical calculations to manipulate an object in three dimensions. Joe himself is a very fine aviation artist and developed the program to assist with the sketching of aircraft in three dimensions in perfect perspective. Joe has a detailed guide to APM on his website so I won't reinvent the wheel here. I find that APM is now a key part of the preparation in most of my work. It allows me to manipulate the wire frame diagram it creates until I'm totally happy with its position, attitude and distance from the viewer, but at the same time remaining confident that other than any errors I may make the the end result will be correct in its perspective. Something that is often lost when photos are copied. ![]() ![]() ![]() superior over the more traditional types of descriptive geometry (DG). DG generally requires each attitude of the object to be created by hand, whereas APM allows for the object to be manipulated over and over again. Once happy with the final attitude of the object it is then a matter of scaling the plot data to the canvas size being used, printing the data which provides a list of X,Y co-ordinates for each point plotted from which the final hand drawn cartoon is created. ![]() ![]() As you can see APM does not draw the aircraft, rather it indicates key points, the number of which depend upon the complexity of the data plot first created. From these a detailed drawing can be created which can later be transferred to a canvas and painted. It's difficult to explain but very simple to use. While Joe developed it with aircraft in mind it can in fact be used for any object the artist wants to portray. Joe Demarco's website Aviart

As you can see with this final APM plot it has the ability to deal with multiply plots being brought
together. This ensures all the objects shown are correct in their pespective relative to both the viewer and the other objects within the picture. This is vital when an aircraft needs to be a specific distance from another aircraft or in this case also an aircraft carrier. With the perspective taken care of I can move on to deal with value, shape and colour. If you have any questions please feel free to drop me a line. Pete |
