Oil on Canvas
20" x 16"
On this page not only do I show a current work in progress but also the steps by which a painting is created.
Stage 1
1
An APM plot is created from 3 view plans and used to help determine the angle and view of the aircraft.

Stage 2
2
Using the APM plot as a guide a rough value sketch is drawn to help establish the light source
and the effect of  light and shadow. (As you can see I got the shadow cast by the upper wing badly wrong here  ! )

Stage 3
3
Once happy with the position and angle of the aircraft the plot data is scaled to the canvas, printed out
and used to create the final "cartoon" which once complete will be transfered to the canvas

Stage 4
4
Given the dark background which had been painted in a few weeks earlier, it was difficult to see the outlines
following the transfer of the cartoon to the canvas. In consequence I opted to quickly paint in a monochrome
image to establish shape and values which would be the guide for the subsequent addition of colour.

Stage 5

Stage 7
7
Pretty much all the base colours are now painted in, and the upper wing shadow has been corrected
along the way. This photo taken in good indirect light is a good match for the actual colours of the painting,
but also shows the texture of the canvas.
8
Some basic detail added to the fuselage and lower wing. Given the amount of white being used
I need to let things dry a little before working on the spars and upper wing.

Very close to being completed
