The
early stages of this one - the inspiration !
I have the urge to portray a couple of GR1 Tornados in action during
the 1st Gulf War (1991) as
I feel the aircraft looks particularly attractive in the desert pink
colour scheme used during the
war.
In researching the sorties the Tornados undertook I found the following
quotes
"...comprised
two Buccaneers and four Tornados from Muharraq. Each of the latter
carried
three
LGB's, a cell of two Tornados and a Bucaneer assigned to each end of
the bridge.Flt Mason
and
SqdLdr Brown flew the Bucaneer XW547 leading the first cell"
"The
practice was therefore adopted of boresighting the PaveSpike and diving
to around 15000ft
while
acquiring the target in the pilot's HUD. Once the navigator had sight
of the target on his
TV
screen the pod's rotating head would be unlocked and the aircraft would
climb, perhaps to
above
the altitude of the two Tornados flying level and in close formation."
When
tied in with this from a Tornado pilot operating with this type of
Tornado/Bucaneer cell
"We
come in close to get concentration of bombs on target - within 100 yd
of the other [Tornado].
We
just sit there for 30-40 seconds in close formation and wait for the
bombs to come off the
lead
aircraft..."
So
two Tornados flying level and close, with a diving or climbing Bucaneer
in the background
- sounds good to me

The basic APM plot
The process of placing the aircraft
begins searching for the best composition
In order for the aircraft to dominate the painting I envisage a very pale receding landscape seen
from altitude merging into a pale blue sky. Bright sunlight will create strong shadows and ensure
a high level of contrast is seen on the aircraft. For maximum impact and to provide sufficient
space for three aircraft I am considering a long, thin canvas - 36" by 18".
