A New Church for a New Town

Most people, when they think of a church, imagine a beautiful old building with a spire and a bell tower, steeped in history stretching back for hundreds of years. The Church of the Holy Trinity is very different; it is a new modern church, dedicated in 1982.  It is jointly owned and shared by not just one, but three denominations - Church of England, Catholic and Methodist.

It is a brick building with a tent shaped roof made of dark grey tiles.  There are no spires, no steeples and only one very modest bell.  Outside the church stands a plain wooden cross 15 feet high on a raised concrete platform.

The new town of South Woodham Ferrers was opened by the Queen in May 1981 and the square in the centre of the town is called Queen Elizabeth II Square.

The church was dedicated a year later, in June 1982.  It is situated in Trinity Square, a short walk away from Queen Elizabeth II Square.
