The landscape in black and white

When properly executed, nothing can compare to the tonal quality of black and white landscape photography. The ability to 'see' in black and white is a very particular skill that has to be acquired. But rest assured, it is a skill that can be learned - and perfected - with practise. There are great freedoms in black and white landscape photography - but as with all freedoms, they can only be enjoyed to the full when they are used with a degree of discipline.

Colour temperature, for instance, doesn't trouble the black and white landscape photographer, but he must pay even more attention to composition, and learn how to use line and shadow to create depth and form. The black and white photographer cannot depend on the glorious colours of a sunset to make an impact, but has to make use of shape and light tones to create and equally - and often greater - visual effect.
