There would be no point in lighting a stained glass window from anywhere but from behind in order to see the colours and design. The restorer was carefully positioned so that the light coming through the window caught his profile and made it stand out from the dark background.

The entire set up was manufactured for the benefit of the photography, although it is totally in keeping with the restorer's working practice and methods... this is exactly how he works, but things are arranged more conveniently for lights and camera.

Two Bowens portable studio lights were used, the main light behind the right hand window was a large wafer. Polaroids were taken, both to check for light reflections and to make sure that the craftsman himself was happy with the way we were working.
