Explain first
You guessed it - this is a posed shot. The venue behind the big top was spotted before the 'actor' was found. His parents co-operated happily once it was explained what was wanted, and they stood beside me as the photograph was taken. The little boy enjoyed hamming it up for the camera, too.

It hardly needs saying these days, but you must ALWAYS seek the permission of the child's parents before asking the child to pose for a photograph. You will rarely be refused if you explain what you are trying to achieve - most parents will be flattered that you want to photograph their children.
