People can be used to bring life to any street scene. In fact, if you have a person in any photograph, no matter how far away and small that person might appear, the eye will be drawn to the figure as if it were magnetic. This can have its advantages if the figure is placed with care, but can ruin a composition if it is allowed to appear in the wrong place.

Pictures like this are simple enough once the location is found, but a little planning can be useful. In this case there is a gateway in the railings beside that white post. People had been spotted making their way through it from around the corner on the far right. It was just a matter of waiting until the right figure appeared and crossed the road.

For any overseas readers who might get the impression that England is paved with cobbles, I can tell them that there are not many cobbled streets left... pity, wet cobbles look wonderful in our photographs.
