Ragged, poor and in hock to the boat owners, the brave men who fish the Indian Ocean in flimsy outrigger sailing canoes are among that breed of people whose daily existence depends on their own skill and courage. And, like so many other people who earn their living from really tough jobs, they are among the most gentle and helpful people you can meet. I have never been refused permission to photograph these people at work.

All that is necessary is that you are genuinely interested in what they do and that you are able to communicate that interest, even when, as in this case, the subject speaks no English and you must communicate with sign language. Language is no barrier to a photographer if he or she has the correct approach to people.

    Excitement
Once again, it is vital, having got yourself into a position to take pictures that you think visually and do not get carried away with the excitement of being where you are. The camera will not record your excitement unless you work carefully to create well composed and considered images. Do that, and the excitement will shine through every time.
