Sussex Strongest Man Competition 12/7/2003

John Bowles Promoter/Judge

l-r Adam Townsend 2nd, Ollie Thompson 1st, Paul Carter 3rd.

A great little show put on by John Bowles and all at Physiques gym at Bexhill on Sea.

1st Ollie Thompson - improving all the time, the best the south has to offer

2nd Adam Townsend - solid performance but seems to lack the all out to win aggressiveness he used to have (I dont think he has been the same since close friend and training partner Marc Illiffe died last year)

3rd - Paul Carter - new found fitness and stamina improving his overall package

4th - bodybuilder Jay Hughes very impressive for a 19 year old but worrying site of him collapsing after every event and having to be carried off.

5th - Andy Mavin - new slimmer lighter Andy fit but lacking power he used to have

6th - Richard Giles - new prospect Richard having a bit of a low patch at the moment but still good effort

7th - Phil Wright - old codger still having a go!

8th - Mick Jones - immensely strong deadlifter needs a bit more experience on the events

9th first timer (name?) very strong but no technique as yet.

White Cliffs Strongman Challenge in Dover 19/7/2003

l – r  Colin Anderson Organiser, Gary Meale 2nd, Pat Smith 1st, Paul Wood 3rd , front John Bowles ref

Another great little show put on by a first time promoter Colin Anderson. On the message board Colin wrote

A Massive, Massive, Thankyou!

I really cannot begin to thank everyone who attended the White Cliffs Strongman Challenge in Dover. The Competitors were all excellent, the supporters were fantastic, and the tireless work of Jon Bowles, Nick Swain (hope I spelled that right), and everyone else who stepped in and lend a hand (and equipment)when needed was very much appreciated.

As you know this contest was my was of doing something to remember my sister, who died 10 years ago this year, and would have been 21 now. As well as wanting to put on a good day for the obvious reasons, I also really wanted it to be a good day to remember her.

Well thanks to all you guys who supported this in whatever way it was a day I'll never forget. I know my parents would also very much like to thank everyone as well.

I have had several positive comments from people connected to the school, and also from locals who popped along to see what was happening. People were using words like "passion" and "determination", as well as saying what nice guys the strongmen were.

Pat yourselves on the back guys you all did very well today!

Thanks again,

Colin”

Frazers Britains Top Ten

August 31st 2003

Healthland

Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant!

What a great show Frazer’s Top 10 was this year!

1st Glenn Ross 56 points

Glenn at his finest, best I’ve ever seen him, 2nd in the farmers!

2nd Mark Felix 42

WOW! Worst technique I’ve ever seen in most of the events by one of the strongest men I’ve ever seen!

3rd Spencer Hyland 38

Spence on his return from a horror injury at BSM showing he’s back & still class.

4th Ollie Thompson 35.5

Another solid performance by the ever improving best Southerner!

5th Tiny Tim Thacker 35

A real future champion if ever I’ve seen one, being nurtured by the now retired great Mal Kaye.

6th Darren Sadler  34

The Pocket Rocket still astounding everyone how on Earth so much power can come out of such a relatively small geezer!

7th Mal Kaye 29

Retirement performance from the ever popular Mal, looking proud as a Peacock that scoretaking partner Jenny is expecting! Still flashes of brilliance finishing all 6 stones!

7th Stumpy 29

Slimmer fitter looking Stumpy continuing with his astonishing bad luck from BSM with his shoe slipping off during truck pull!

9th Adam Townsend 28.5

Adam still accomplished but lacking that drive and performance that we come to expect from him. Lot on his plate lately with studies etc.

10th Christian Clay 26

The inimitable Christian and Grandad from the valleys representing Wales.

11th Paul Carter 23.5

Disappointing performance from Paul who tied with Mark Felix for 3rd place the week before at Allhallows.

12th Louis McLean 13.5

Fit and fast Jamie Barr lookalike Louis found it hard going amongst this field. One for the future.

COMMENTS
Great competition had by all, a beautiful weekend in sunny Bangor, Northern Ireland. Trish was on fire this weekend maintaining her lead after just the second event. Definitely a world class competitor, now being 2 times UKs champion and deserves once again a stab at world's strongest woman as this year she beat a strong field over 8 events instead of 6, I hope I am not talking out of turn but the BSW Champion Marion Noble would not have beat Trish this weekend, though invited well in advance as dates and events and all girls notified back in february, Marion was clearly scared to get her ass beat, once again! What I am about to say maybe a big speak from the daddy but I know what's right and what's wrong and say what I think and I stand by what I say. I promised a show to all the girls in the United Kingdom with power events and heavy moving ones, testing all parts of the body (the factor of goodlooks or the ability to fry chips never came into the equation in selecting). I invited the best in the United Kingdom from strongwoman Jackie Young (who has not won any strongwoman title to date, though finished a worthy 2rd in worlds, still did not do a British qualifier)to powerlifters. This is my big speak, why did we not see Jackie, Marion and others there, your food and accommodation were paid for, £600 prize money for first place, £300 - 2nd, £100 - 3rd.

How are we going to improve the sport when these girls don't attend nationals to prove who is the best, cause I can tell you now, Trish Porter is the UK Strongest Woman and I call on all you girls who failed to show your face, prove me wrong.

Jo Cutts who came second in the competition showed consistency throughout with a fanastic grip in the Samson Scales.

Julie Dunkley who finished third (new kid on the block)shocked everybody by winning the first event and remaining second through most of the competition, also winning the viking press with a massive 14 reps.

Elaine Bell who finished fourth, a true sportswoman, woman of the match for me, winning the Queen Maeve Warrior's Medal for overall effort, the complete package winning the deadlift hold.

Tracey Thompson who finished fifth, a extremely tall, athletic strongwoman who did well in her first time out.

Jenny Black who finished sixth, Mal Kay's partner, first time out winning the train pull convincingly.

Hanna Bingle who finished seventh, mother hen to all the girls, did well in the viking press with a third best result to show her calibre.

Congratulations to everyone, thankyou to all the girls and sponsors who made this possible.

See you all next year.

The competitors were as follows:
1) Tim Thacker (or Tiny) from Harrogate who competed in Britains Heats this year
2) Terry Cochrane from Scarborough who was a last minute replacement
3) A swedish bloke but I cant remember his name!
4) Francis Kirby from Ireland. Ulsters strongest man
5) Darren Sadler from Harrogate (also in this years Britains strongest man heats)
6) Simon Morton from Durham (another Britains heat competitor)
7) Mark Westerby from York (his first major comp, did well at Scarboroughs strongest man last year)
8) Stumpy from Barnsley (the most famous competitor!)

The first event was a JCB push using back wheel to push against. Suprisingly Simon and Mark were the best at this event (could it be because they are Farmers?)

The second event was an axel + tyre lift above the head.

Unfortunately Simon who was in 1st place after the two events had to retire due to a calf injury.

The 3rd event was loading an atlas stone onto a platform as many times as possible

After this event Francis Kirby had to retire due to a bicep tear.

The fourth event was lifting weights on the leg machine. Only Darren and Stumpy could manage to get at least 1 rep on this event.

The final event was lifting 5 barrels onto the stage and building them into a pyramid.

The final placings were:
1) Stumpy
2) Darren Sadler
3) Mark Westerby
Joint 5Tim Thacker and Terry Cochrane
6) The Swedish Bloke (who by the end was limping)
7) Simon Morton

Francis kirby had to leave the comp to get treatment on his injury.

Report

Firstly well done Steve & Lynn Brooks, all the crew boys, Rob Dixon (compere), Frazer Tranter (referee), Dave Warner, Glenn Ross, Jen (Mal Kayes girlfriend) for doing the scoring, and everyone else who were involved in the organising of a great contest. Sorry if I’ve left anyone out! please post at the bottom if I have!

A good hard 2 day eventer which really proved what we all know already is that Eddy Ellwood is as good as people say he is! Its exciting that we have a true World Class athlete to hopefully send to WSM. If Richard Gosling can knuckle down to serious training he’s another great all rounder that could make his mark at WSM. My "man of the match" has to be Tiny Tim Thacker a prodigy of Dave Warner and Mal Kaye. A big raw boned brute with big hands and joints who is so powerful and adept at such a young age 23 (I think) one to watch out for. Ollie Thompson the only Southerner to make it through to BSM although a lacklustre performance on the first day nearly put paid to that. The top fifteen were as follows:

1 Ellwood - awesome
2 Pittuck - typical Bill, solid performance even after ankle injury had him doing the cross walk like Quasimodo!
3 Rich Gosling - good at all events, always seems as if he is in it half hearted. Oozes talent.
4 Rollinson - seemed to struggle a bit, not his usual smooth performance but still one to watch BSM.
5 Stumpy - good & bad events, ferocious battle with Simon Flint in the pole push!
6 Bowers - A revitalised Lee Bowers, very impressive - winning Pole push, completing all 5 barrels, 2nd in log and then goes and blows it by not lifting the farmers!
7 Mick Gosling - Shines in some events not in others, more to come I think
8 Thacker - Man of the Match!
9 Hyland - getting better at events now, could be too muscly!
10 Townsend - under par but still enough
11 Flint - bigger than ever! stamina suffering
12 Sadler - always impressive but found some events like arm over arm difficult
13 Thompson - best of the southerners, great pole push 2nd!
14 Kaye - got injured in deadlift, lets hope he’s ok as BSM is in his back yard - Scarborough!
15 Broomfield - best of the rest, I’m glad he got through
RESERVE CARL WAITOA

cant wait till BSM!
Regards

Phil

Good hard fought show dominated by Oli Thompson. Last years Kent’s Strongest Man.   Newcomer Carl Waitoa very strong but needs event training to reach full potential (12 reps in the 250kg d/l)

Much improved performances from Steve NcNeill and Dean Edwards both looking good. Richard Giles huge jump in class nearly scuppered by only scraping 1 rep in the deadlift, almost out as it was a compulsory lift!

Johnny Kiss looking ahead and just did enough to qualify. Giant novice Paul Carter’s power got him through.

Good competitive show but I think the lads are going to find it harder going at the England’s in 2 weeks.

Good luck boys!

A monster heavy show put on by Steve Brookes and Rob Dixon. The heaviest I’ve ever seen and some said too heavy for that late in the season but it was a proper Strongman Show! 125kg Axel lifts, 145kg!! Square sectioned farmers plus 330kg tyre flip, 400kg!! Basque circle, 5 stones 110kg – 165kg! Axe Hold.

Big Ade Rollinson showing that he is World Class by winning the overall contest with his easy completion of the Stones. Big Ade does not seem to stand out in any one event (except the stones) but ends up winning!

Adam Townsend goes from strength to strength. After seeing him win Allhallows 2002 he impressed me yet again at this heavy show narrowly missing winning it. He really is a great all rounder who I tip to be in top 3 of this years BSM.

Spencer Hyland the ex boxer who is probably one of the strongest men on the scene but who always seemed to lack event experience. He obviously has been getting some event training because now he is applying that huge power more technically he is always going to be up there.

Another good solid performance from Bill Pittuck. Johnny Kiss still improving and showing more gutsy aggression and technique now I’ve heard a rumour that he’s training with the Pittuck/Townsend/Illiffe camp. Simon Morton surprised me, what a monster! Started with 7 reps of the axel press which was only beaten by one athlete who got 8!, really impressive.

Darren Sadler “The Might Atom!” looks small up against the other monsters but WOW! Astonishing! So much power and technique, flew around with the 400kg Basque circle 3 times I think!

Stuart Murray looked very strong and back from his injury nightmares. Mal Kaye looked in great shape and is preparing for this years BSM (his last unfortunately) which is being held in his home town of Scarborough. Simon Flint (Big Scarey F****r) looked massive and again bursting with power but lacking event training, definitely one to watch out for in the next few years. The London boys Andy Mavin and Richard “Sweetspot” Giles found the going a bit too heavy and returned to training with a new found urgency the following day!

Good World Class Contest from Steve and Rob which was compered by 3 times British Strongest Man, Irelands Strongest Man and Worlds Strongest Man competitor Big Glenn Ross and Rob Dixon.

winner Big Ade with promoters Rob Dixon and Steve Brooks

Quite a hectic show with about 40 in the Novice and 20 in the Open but we got through it ok!

A really consistent performance from Adam Townsend won the Open with Mick Gosling looking very impressive in 2nd place. Alex Hunter was back to his old self with a gutsy performance after a slightly grey patch earlier in the year due to personal problems.

Russ Bradley showed flashes of his old self in finishing the grueling medley. Lee Bowers very powerful but dreadful performance in the Skip Hold lost him too many points to catch up. Frazer Tranters man of the match was Ollie Thompson who once again showed great improvement and proved that his Kent’s Strongest Man win was no one off.

Lorry pull was very heavy and started in a bit of a dip with mainly only the big bodyweight boys budging it. 135kg farmers suitcases were handled very well by most of the competitors with Mick Gosling going past the 40m finish line and continuing till about 64m which beat Frazers previous record of 54m.

Johnnie Kiss again gutsy as they come.

Novice show dominated by Ricky Bartholomew and John Bowles with Mick Horwood.

Skip hold proved a huge success with athletes, made heavier for the Open by adding beer barrels.

Truck pull started in a dip very hard pull.

SOLID tyres caught a lot out!

115 logs head to head

Lee Bowers with the 95k farmers at the end of the grueling medley.

Adam Townsend on his way to winning the Open.

Another top quality contest by a new promoter Alex Hunter. This team show was very gruelling with some of the competitors really feeling the effects of 3 shows in 3 weeks!

Mick Gosling and Steve Brooks won 5 out of the 6 events and looked every bit the quality they are. Steve a UK Strongest Man winner and Mick a WSM competitor this year.  New boy Ollie Thompson proved his Kents Strongest Man title was no fluke by giving a solid performance with his partner John Bowles to take 2nd place in front of local favorites Alex Hunter and Steve McNeill.
