Phil Secure 1998 Allhallows Strongman
An excellent turn out at what ended up a magnificent bank holiday weekend. The novice and veteran class was held together on the Sunday using a jeep instead of a lorry in the truck pull, 50 kg log instead of 110 kg in the log lift, 100 kg barrels instead of 125 in the dreymans load and 70 kg instead of 90 kg in the farmers walk.
I myself entered the novice in what was my first contest and was very pleased with my 3rd place. At 6' 2" and 20 stone I've always been strong but my stamina leaves a lot to be desired. However I enjoyed it so much I am now in training for the UK Docklands Novice class in 1999.
The novice was won by Neal Bradley who looked a bit of an old hand at all this and looks promising to go further in strongman contests. The first and second places were always going to be between him and Paul How.
Second place was Paul How who we collared from the crowd to compete as he looked a big lump! Paul was a monster and the crowd loved him! He obviously trains and is very strong but lacked technique in the specific events. A definite prospect to look out for.
3rd place on the day was awarded to Dave Bullivant who came down to the show with Rob Dixon, however when I checked the scores after I had in fact came 3rd!
4th was Dave who at only 15 stone gave a fantastic performance. His stamina was a big plus point.
Joint 5th was Tony Leigh who runs Pecs Gym in Crayford and Jerry Judge who does not even train! he is a rugby player.
7th was Eddie Cooper who was a very young chap who this was his first ever contest. He was a bit raw but his determination and guts was impressive. His performance in the log lift was outstanding and with a few years training behind him and some specific strongman training in particular he will definitely be someone to keep an eye on.
The referee was Dave Madden a record holder weightlifter, and the score taker was Stevie Cross.
I will return to this and update as I know more.
Afterwards there was some great games with the children , guess who beat the team below in the tug of war?

look below, this team done em 2 nil!

although admittedly there were about another 50 kids on the end of the rope!
