| A particularly fine hand-crafted reproduction of an early 16th century
English curule chair. Made of English oak (quercus robur) with a substantial
hide seat and back, the chair has a beeswax finish.
These chairs originated in the ancient civilisations of Egypt & Rome. Made to fold slightly, they were taken on military campaigns across the world, passing into the chairmaking traditions of medieval Europe. As the skills of early woodcraftsmen were available only to the wealthy, these chairs would indicate high military, civil or religious rank. |
