BATTLES AND WARS A relatively quiet time the Victorian era was devoid of the major sea battle which preceded and followed. However there were still plenty examples of the use of sea power as illustrated below:
- Crimean War 1854-1856.

- American Civil War 1861-1865.
- Denmark's war with Germany 1864. On 9th May a battle took place off Helgoland between The Danish squadron under Suenson and an Austrian-Prussian squadron under Tegetthoff.

- The Battle of Lissa 1866. The first open sea engagement between modern ironclad fleets. It involved the Austrian and Italian navies, and took place off the Adriatic island of Lissa on 20 July 1866. Husscar Battles She fought against the Peruvian ironclad Independence; against the British South America Squadron of wooden vessels; during 1879, alone, she faced all the Chilean Navy, and, during six months, avoided the invasion of Peru by Chilean troops.
