Village life

The electric trams run by the Belfast Corporation Tramway Department, followed the horse trams, with bus services to Dundonald and Gilnahirk run by the Belfast Omnibus Company and later the Major Bus Company. Trams and single deck buses gave way to Double Deck buses and Trolley Buses which were introduced in the late forties, after the end of the second world war.

With cemeteries situated at Knock and Dundonald, horse drawn carriages and horses were a common sight in Ballyhackamore, as they often stopped at the local hostelries on their return journey.

With many horses in Ballyhackamore, it was logical to have a Forge. The McNally family were the village Blacksmiths and the Forge was situated at the corner of Pasadena Gardens to the rear of the present Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The trades and type of shops over the years has changed. The Grocers and Butchers in Ballyhackamore delivered to Holywood, Stormont, Dundonald, Knock and Castlereagh and prior to 1950 used horse transport.
