Pickled Carp Adventures Extreme Nymphing - South African Yellowfish |
|
We explored fishing venues up and down the river in an attempt to find less extreme rapids, this proved fruitless but we caught fish anyway. Here is Richard in a tussle with a Yellow from Eendekuil, you can see the wake of water against the back of Richard's legs; he was at maximum wading depth for this beat, any deeper and he would have been going for a swim!

It became apparent, very quickly, that finding the right depth was important. The fish were in knee-deep water or less, and it needed to be pushing through, if the surface was flat there were no fish present. The type of riverbed was a key factor too, they liked it rocky. Gravel and flat bedrock were devoid of fish, it needed to be rough with boulders and rocks lining the bottom, if you weren't tripping up you would not be catching. Here I am with a 4lber taken in water that didn't wet my knees.
