Extreme Nymphing - South African Yellowfish

The fight from these fish was tremendous! They would regularly take most of the fly line, often they would swim up stream at a blistering pace, passing through serious white water before you could stop them. Here Rob hooks a fish at his feet that tears off downstream, then makes a left turn and crosses the white water with little effort, before taking more line.

One of the consequences of fishing in such extreme conditions, for a fish with so much fight, was hooks being straightened. Most of the patterns catching fish were in sizes 12-16. Even Kamasan Grub Hooks were being opened by these power monsters. These are a sample of hooks from my fly patch, after the Yellows had finished with them.

All in all a superb weeks fishing, in awesome surroundings, catching the marvellous Smallmouth Yellowfish. It was arm aching, extreme nymphing at its very best!

.... and all shared with some great company, Cheers!
