What is expected of the supervisor

All groups coming into the area for expedition assessment by the Panel should have an accompanying supervising adult who is responsible for the welfare and safety of the group members. The Panel assessors are only responsible for making an impartial assessment of the venture.

Panel members are not prepared to act as a supervising adult for any groups coming for assessment except on the Open weeks run by the Panel.

The supervising adult should be in the area where the expedition is taking place and should be in a position where he/she can be contacted by the group and by the assessors if necessary.

A method of communication between the group, the assessors and the supervisors can be agreed at the pre-venture check.

Accreditation course for supervisors

A new accreditation course has been developed for expedition supervisors. The programme is designed to enable existing and potential Expedition Supervisors to become nationally accredited to supervise Award Participants undertaking Expedition Section ventures, in either normal country at Bronze and Silver Levels, or in defined Wild Country at Gold Level.

More information can be obtained from the Duke of Edinburgh Award site.
