When did you form Play? [Billy] Play came together really back in 1994 as a natural progression between myself and Hector. We'd both been in cover and original bands but wanted to do something on a recording level where gigs wern't the priority. What are the band's aims? [Hector] To progress with each new song. Explore new ideas. Just to continue to develop musically.
When was your first gig? [Hector] July 9th 1995. It was a Sunday and we played at The Rock Garden in London's Covent Garden. I've still got the contract for it and there's even a video hidden deep in the play vaults. Are you typical of other British bands? [Hector] I hope not - we all like to think we are a little different. What instruments do you play?
[Billy] We can both play equally but I generally play the guitar parts and Hector the bass. We share the
drum rhythms. Just occasionally I might add a keyboard piece if the song needs it. What are your influences? [Billy] I don't think we're influenced by anyone. But we do sound like we are. I just write whatever I'm able to at the time. If it sounds similiar it's just coincidence. I do have a particular sound in mind with each recording. A Token Gesture - Why that title? [Hector] It's just a title, not a statement. Everything can be done better. It's a lead-on if anything - or at least I hope it is. Why the name 'Play'? [Hector] It seemed so obvious to us. It has so many connotations to it. The diversity within the meaning fits us perfect - we are play! Who thought of it? [Billy] I did. This was back in 1994 in the old millennium. I checked out everywhere and no-one was using it. A great name like that and no-one saw the potential in it. When did you start the website? [Billy] This website was launched as they say on July 7th 2000 as "Play - The Official Band Website". We went right round the web - looked everywhere, you know did the whole bit and there was no-one anywhere globally using it as a band name, or with any semblance of a web presence. We just had to set this thing up. We registered the domain names 'playtheband.com' and 'playband.com' and their 'co.uk' equivalents and all the search engines accepted us without question - that's over two years ago now - it's never looked back. What do you hope to achieve with the website? [Hector] To make people everywhere aware of us and our music. It's all here on the site - song downloads, lyrics, history and news. What of tomorrow? [Hector] Who knows. Today is for now. This band is quite a cult now and we didn't want to go mainstream anyway. It's not what we're about. |
