'PORT BOSS WALSH PAYS PRICE
30/09/03
Southport Visiter
-
MIKE WALSH has been sacked as manager of Southport.

The one-time Everton defender has paid the ultimate price for the Sandgrounders' disappointing start to the new season, including last Saturday's early exit from the FA Cup at Vauxhall Motors.

Chairman Charlie Clapham said: "Following our run of poor results, it is with regret that Southport Football Club have agreed to mutually terminate the contract of manager Mike Walsh with immediate effect.

"We desperately wanted it to work, but it hasn't worked out and performances and results have dictated a change.

"Coming second was considered at the start of the season as unacceptable, and our current league position and exit from the FA Cup reflect the board's decision.

"Mike was totally committed to the club and he is gutted that it hasn't happened."

Walsh took over at Haig Avenue from Phil Wilson last January, but was unable to prevent a slide down the Conference table which culminated in their relegation to the UniBond Premier Division.

The side won their opening four games of this season without conceding a goal as they looked for an immediate return to the Conference.

But they have collected just four points from their last seven games and have slipped to ninth.

Skipper Steve Soley is still ruled out by a recurring hamstring injury for the visit of Barrow, while winger Peter Thomson faces a late check after illness forced him out at the weekend.

MANAGER WALSH PARTS COMPANY WITH SOUTHPORT FC
29/09/03
Southport Football Club have announced today that, with regret team manager Mike Walsh has parted company with the Sandgrounders after 32 games in charge at Haig Avenue.

After a poor run of form, cumulating in the ‘Port winning only one match in 8 games, the club and manager have ‘mutually agreed’ to terminate the former Bury and Barrow manager’s contract.

Walsh took over in the Haig Avenue hot-seat following the sacking of Phil Wilson in January 2003 after Chairman, Charlie Clapham, a long friend of Walsh’s appointed the former Everton centre-half as caretaker, however after being impressed with the progress being made, he thought that a consistent, stable manager was the way forward.

However, after signing a three-year full-time contract, Walsh only managed to win 6 games out of 20 and the Sandgrounders were subsequently relegated from the Nationwide Conference to the Unibond Premier League. He started his reign with a replay victory over Dagenham & Redbridge, however suffered heavy defeats at home to Doncaster and away on the final day of the season against Stevenage.

The Sandgrounders started the current season in superb style, winning all of their first 4 games, scoring 10 goals without conceding. However, after a defeat at Stalybridge Celtic on September 2nd, Southport have only managed to pick up 4 points out of a possible 21 and were eliminated from the FA Cup in the Second Qualifying round on Saturday at Vauxhall – for only the 3rd time in the club’s history.

At the start of the season, ‘Port chairman, Charlie Clapham said anything other than promotion would not be good enough and he has decided the way forward is not with long fiend Walsh.

Clapham released a statment saying: “We have a number of very good footballers at the club. With Mike Walsh it simply has not worked. We were in deep trouble when he arrived and those problems sadly were not arrested. Managers are judged on results. At the start of the season we said coming second was not acceptable. Therefore our current position and cup exit made change inevitable. Mike has been totally committed to the club and he is gutted it has not worked the way we all wanted. Football is all about performances and to be more exact results. Tony Hesketh will act in a caretaker capacity and he will get the support he needs if he requires to bring players in. We go into the Barrow match with 99 points to play for. It is well within our capabilities to put a run together. Tomorrow night we need all our supporters to rally as I know they can and we can all get back on track. I will await applications for the post as manager and Tony Hesketh has the first opportunity to show supporters his qualities.”

Walsh’s assistant, Tony Hesketh will take temporary charge of the team for tomorrow’s visit of Barrow.

Port Pie wishes Mike all the best for the future and would like to thank him for the hard work, commitment and dedication he has given the club during his reign as manager.

BEESLEY LOAN TERMINATED
26/09/03
Striker Mark Beesley has returned to Chester City, after his agent advised his not to play in tomorrow's FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round match at Vauxhall Motors.

The 22-year old was originally given the all clear to play in Saturday's cup tie by Chester City manager and former 'Port boss Mark Wright. Current Southport manager Mike Walsh described Wright's decision as a 'terrific gesture, however, after talks with the Deva striker's agent late last night was 'very dissapointed' he had to make the decision to axe him from the squad.

It is understood that an nunamed Midlands club is chasing the signatue of Beesley and an appearence in tomorrow's tie would mean his is Cup tied and couuld not play any further part in this season's competition despite which club he moves to.

Beesley was drafted into the Southport squad on the 8th of September and hit the post within minutes of his debut in the defeat to Runcorn FC Halton. He fianlly got his goal against Droylsden and impressed in his 5 games in a yellow shirt. However, his realese will leave a selection dilema for manager Walsh, with fellow striker Peter Thomson believed to be out for tomorrow's clash.

CAPTAIN CROCKED
26/09/03
Southport Visiter
-
SOUTHPORT were dealt a massive blow this week when skipper Steve Soley was ruled out for several weeks with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

This latest problem comes at a time when Port manager Mike Walsh needs all his experienced players fully fit as his squad embarks on what could be a make or break October.

Soley only played a handful of matches last season, his injuries, coupled with suspensions, keeping him on the sidelines for much of the campaign.

And Walsh has decided that Barry Jones has no long-term future at the club and has circulated his name to UniBond and Conference clubs.

Tomorrow see the Port set out on their FA Cup campaign at fellow Unibond Premier side Vauxhall Motors tomorrow.

For the Sandgrounders, a successful Cup run can kick-start a season that looked awesome in August but stuttered in September. October offers optimism.

Mike Walsh said on the month ahead: "We have decided we are taking each game as it comes. We are not looking at other clubs, it is about us acquiring three points at a time and tomorrow progressing in the FA Cup. We are looking forward to Saturday and all our efforts will be focused on the Cup."

Walsh has to make changes from Tuesday night's squad, with new short-term signing Tony Hallam not eligible for this round. Skipper Steve Soley is out but Mark Wright at Chester City has agreed to allow on-loan striker Mark Beesley to participate in the Port's early FA Cup rounds.

Morecambe's Tony Hallam had an impressive debut against Altrincham, though Walsh feels the 20-year-old goal-scoring centre-back is a little rusty. Jim Harvey has acknowledged he needs competitive first team football, hence Morecambe's permission to join the Sandgrounders.

After Tuesday night's match physio Bret Harris reported everyone had come through with Paul Byrne making an impressive return at left-back. Danny Stone, out since the Runcorn defeat, well on the mend. Steve Pickford skippered the side for the first time on Tuesday night and will keep the role tomorrow.

JONES LISTED
24/09/03
Central defender Barry Jones, who made his 100th Southport appearance earlier this month away at Hucknall Town has been told he is surplus to requirements at Haig Avenue.

Jones, a Phil Wilson signing who made his debut away at Dagenham in 2001 has been a rock at the heart of the Southport defence since his arrival and became a favorite amongst the Southport fans. He signed from Third Division York City after skippering the Ministermen and partnered Martin Clark and Shaun Teale in a central trio in defence for his first year. He was then named vice-captain last season, deputizing for the injured Steve Soley and was the most consistent defender under both Wilson and Walsh.

Defenders Clark, Winstanley, Moore and Davis were all paired along side the former Wrexham man who was a regular in a back three and a back 2 after Walsh’s arrival, making 49 starts

The 33-year old also started this season as an ever-present, as he was the only recognized defender in the Southport side before pre-season started. However, after disappointing performances against Stalybridge where he was sent-off and Hucknall Town, manager Walsh saw fit to drop him form the starting line-up and then the squad.

Jones’ listing comes 2 days after defender Tony Hallam signed on a 3 month loan deal from Morecambe, making his competitive debut on Tuesday against Altrincham after partnering Jones in defence for 2 pre-season matches. The timing of Mike Walsh’s decision will be questioned, with defenders thin on the ground as Danny Stone is injured and with new signing Hallam ineligible for Saturday’s cup tie, Jones may start even despite his name being circulated around Conference and UniBond clubs.

DEFENDER SIGNS TO IMPROVE LEAKING DEFENCE
22/09/03
Centre-back Tony Hallam has joined on loan from Morecambe, as 'Port manager Mike Walsh aims to strengthen a flimsy back-line.

Southport have conceded 12 goals in their last 6 matches and the tempory addition of a player who was once on the books on Preston North End will hopefully shore up a leaking defence. Hallam will be familiar to Southport fans, not for wearing the red of their seaside rivals, but for turning out for the Sandgrounders in pre-season.

The 20-year old, Ormskirk born player made 2 starts for the 'Port aginst Wigan Athletic and Skelmersdale United, scoring in the match at Victoria Park and caught the eye of many Sandgrounders. He has joined originally on a 3 month loan deal and is in line to start tomorrow against Altrincham.

Despite his age, Hallam has an experienced head. He is very strong aerially as well as on the ground with a tough tackle and good organisation skills. The big defender signed for Morecambe at the beginning of the 2002/2003 season, but was unfortunate to pick up a bad injury on his debut. He missed all of last season, and at the beginning of this, Southport were interested in securing his services, however, opted for full-time football and a return to Christie Park.

Southport have leaked many goals from set-pieces this season, as the lack of height ib the team has proven costly to mIke Walsh and his side. However, the manager has agin opted for his policy of bringing in young, promising players and Hallam will add some much needed height and strength in a back-line which made such a good start to the season.

ABER 'KEEPER SIGNS AS BACK-UP
19/09/03
With next week’s FA Cup fixture at Vauxhall Motors looming, Southport have completed their second signing of the day in the form of Aberystwyth Town goalkeeper.

Mike Kinsella. Unlike the UniBond Premier League, in the FA Cup, teams are allowed to name 5 players on the substitute’s bench with a back-up goalkeeper usually included.
Liverpool-born Kinsella was a regular in the League of Wales after he signed in January 2001 from Rossendale United until the start of this season when he was forced out of the Aber first team by Jon Worsnop’s arrival. He will act as back-up to Steve Dickinson throughout the season.

6’1’’ ‘Kinny’ is expected to play for the reserves tonight against Guisley, as he is lacking match practice following his time on the Park Avenue sidelines.

ATKINSON ADDITION TO 'PORT SQUAD
19/09/03
Mike Walsh has added to his squad with the signing of former Preston North End player Graeme Atkinson from Spennymoor United who is more familiar as a left-sided midfielder, but can also play at left-back.

The 31-year old signed this morning and will add competition for places in the back line, with 3 players already able to play in the left-back birth, but in recent times has become more accustomed to playing on the left-hand side of midfield. The Sandgrounders have no out-and-out left winger in their ranks, although Lee Mulvaney has slotted in there, exchanging positions with play maker Lee Ashcroft.

However, when the injuries come and players lack in form, it’s good to have a solid back-up, but Atkinson won’t want to keep the bench warm, the Dr. Marin’s Premier League winner with Tamworth will want to force his way into Walsh’s starting plans.

Atkinson started his career with home town club Hull City in 1990 where he made 129 Football League starts. He moved from Boothferry Park to Preston North End in 1994 for £8,000 before loan spells at Rochdale, Brighton and a brief spell at Scunthorpe United. Atkinson has non-league experience at Scarborough, Tamworth and fellow UniBond Premier League side Spennymoor United where he was released last Sunday.

Southport manager, Walsh said of his new acquisition: “I am very pleased to have signed a player with Graeme’s experience, he gives us balance plus options on our left hand side.’

Atkinson is available for tomorrow’s UniBond League trip to Ashton United.

STAFFORD RE-SIGNS AS YOUTH COACH
19/09/03
It has been confirmed that former Burscough assistant manager Ray Stafford will return to Haig Avenue as Southport's 18-20-year old scout for the North West. Stafford left the Sandgrounders in 2002 to work along side Shaun Teale at Burscough where the duo lead the Linnets to FA Trophy Final success in their first season but were sacked only weeks later. The 'Port tried to persuade Teale to join as a player earlier in the season, however, he is determined to receive all unpaid money to him by the Victoria park club.

RACE STILL WIDE OPEN

AFTER the intense disappointment of losing at Worksop on Tuesday night, Southport boss Mike Walsh this week spoke of his determination to continue playing strong, attacking football.

He said: "We will always be an attack-minded side. I am aware teams have been hitting us on the break after defending in numbers against us.

"If we are 1-0 down we won't accept that or settle for it. We will never lie down and at Woking we took risks to get the equaliser."

Southport travel to Ashton on Saturday, followed by the visit of Altrincham to Haig Avenue on Tuesday night.

Team news tomorrow sees central defender Barry Jones available after suspension. The versatile Paul Haddow deputised for Jones at Worksop.

Left-back Paul Byrne is close to a return and Danny Stone is receiving treatment on an ankle injury and could be available.

A disappointed Walsh said after watching his side strive for reward at Worksop: "It's difficult to test the keeper when they put ten behind the ball on a tight pitch. We had no space to play, we put Ashy (Lee Ashcroft) wide left late on and I was insisting we hugged the touchlines in the second-half. That is the way to break it down and put some quality balls into the box.

"We switched the play very well, I am so pleased with the way we played, in many ways it is the best we have played this season. They have defended like Trojans and we are all sickened. We have done everything once they scored to take the game to them.

"I have told my players we will lose one game in a hundred if we play like that. We have to look forward to the trip to Ashton and get another win under our belts. We know how well we can play."

* Southport have been drawn at Vauxhall Motors in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, to be played next Saturday.

'PORT FACE FA CUP DERBY
15/09/03
Southport have drawn fellow UniBond Premier League side and fellow Merseyside neighbors Vauxhall Motors in the 2nd Qualifying Round of this season's FA Cup.

The tie will be played at Rivace Park, Elsmere Port on Saturday 27th September.

A trip across the water will be no easy task, as Alvin McDonald's Motormen captured the nations' eyes with a penalty defeat of Second Division Queens Park Rangers a First Round replay, before losing out to Macclesfield Town in front of the Sky Sports Cameras.

The 'Port did not do too badly themselves last season either. Again, they made the national headlines with a 4-2 victory over Second Division Notts County thanks to a Steve Pickford brace, Peter Thomson goal and a Chris Lane thunderbolt. The game was shown as the main highlight package on BBC Match of the Day when commentator Barry Davis and his team visited Haig Avenue.

It's the first time the Sandgrounders have been entered at the Second Qualifying Round for many years, as Conference teams enter the Cup 2 stages later at the 4th Qualifying Round.

The Wirral side will be a very tough test. Lat season, they finished a more than creditable 3rd in only their 2nd season in the Premier Division and many reckoned they would have pushed champions Accrington Stanley further if it was not for their fixture backlog as a result of their marvelous cup runs. However, this season they have been slightly inconsistent, sitting in 10th [place at the time of the draw, after suffering 3 defeats.

The scores are level after 90 minutes, there will be a replay at Haig Avenue on Tuesday 30th September.

I WAS EMBARRASSED, SAYS ANGRY WALSH
12/09/03
Southport Visiter
-
SOUTHPORT boss Mike Walsh and his players have to get out of the doldrums at Haig Avenue against Droylsden tomorrow and arrest an alarming September slump.

Three straight defeats, conceding nine goals and scoring only one, led Walsh to acknowledge: "The wheels have come off the track and I was embarrassed by our Runcorn performance. We have got to get it back quickly.

"As soon as their second goal went in I've never seen so many heads drop, I think players have to come to terms with the Unibond. Teams play deep at Haig Avenue and they clear the ball out to their strikers. They hit us on the break.

"I cannot offer any excuses and the supporters are quite entitled to have a go at me because I have certainly had a go at the team. We have to be a lot better. Our defending was weak and it is paramount we strengthen the squad.

"We need people at the back who will stand up and be counted. Once a team has scored against us we buckle. Confidence has gone from being a top of the table side to a low. Good play-ers are looking poor."

The Monday night signing on loan of Chester striker Mark Beesley will not be the end of Walsh's transfer activity as the defence becomes an immediate priority with reinforcements necessary to shore up the leaky Sandgrounders, whose susceptibility to crosses was again exposed by Runcorn's third goal on Tuesday night.

Each defeat, at Stalybridge and Hucknall plus Runcorn, has seen Southport so close to scoring in the early stages but at Hucknall and on Tuesday night they have conceded virtually straight after.

Ex-Preston striker Mark Beesley nearly capped his debut with a dream fourth minute goal on Tuesday night. Instead, his placed shot thumped off the right-hand post and the Linnets response on six minutes began a night of total despair.

Walsh shuffled his line-up against Runcorn, partnering Danny Stone with Neil Whitworth while Liam McGuire came in at right back and Lee Clitheroe left. Barry Jones dropped to the bench. At half-time Peter Thomson replaced Mark Byrne while, later, Barry Jones came on for McGuire pushing Stone back to right back. Debutant Beesley departed giving Andy Whittaker the last 13 minutes.

Team news tomorrow sees left back Paul Byrne absent with a tendon injury. Steve Soley had a rigorous workout with physio Bret Harris and his progress was monitored last night. Jimmy Williams, who came off with a tightening hamstring in last week's reserve match, could also be added to the squad. Barry Jones serves his Stalybridge red card suspension at Worksop.

STRIKER BEESLEY JOINS FOR A MONTH
09/09/03
Southport have added to their forward line with he addition of Chester City striker Mark Beesley on a month’s loan.

The 22-year old will add extra competition up-front, as the ‘Port’s championship assault has met a few hiccups during the past 2 games. The ‘Port also failed to score in a match for the first time in Saturday’s defeat at Hucknall and with play-maker Lee Ashcroft struggling with a hamstring knock and has been indispensable so far this campaign, Walsh has moved quickly to prevent any crisis from arising.

Beesley will add a lot of skill, pace and flair to the Sandgrounder’s line-up and is no stranger to finding the back of the net. Despite having a number of strikers to choose from, Walsh has opted to bring in a loan signing with bags of both experience and potential.

Beesley is no cast off and no reject, in fact the 22-year old, Ormskirk born striker was Chester’s leading goalscorer in the 2001/2002 campaign with 18 goals to his name at only 19 years of age. However, since Mark Wright’s arrival as manager, Beesley has found a regular first-team place hard to come by, with the addition of well proven Conference strikers such as Daryl Clare, Ryan Sugden, Dave Cameron and last season, Mark Quale. There is no doubt about the ability of Beesley, a former Preston trainee with a handful of Football League appearances and will be a promising addition to the Sandgrounder’s charge. If sucessful, one would expect Beesley's initial one month deal to be extended.

STAFFORD RE-SIGNS AS YOUTH COACH

MIKE Walsh's Southport are at Hucknall tomorrow and at Haig Avenue on Tuesday night when they face Runcorn.

So early in the season the Sandgrounders have big games coming thick and fast as the Unibond goes into a hectic September schedule which will see the Sand-grounders play in nine fixtures.

After the defeat at Stalybridge, Walsh reflected: "The big lesson from the defeat was that if we concede a goal we need to keep our shape. We dominated the game, had a lot of chances, their keeper was their man-of-the-match. Our football is all about passing and getting the ball wide.

"We need to keep to our principals. Saying that they equalised from a dubious penalty and though their second was a great shot from distance it was our mistake which gave them the opportunity. We have to bounce back tomorrow."

Tuesday night's 2-1 set back at Stalybridge saw the Sandgrounders slip to fourth in the Unibond table while Hucknall's 2-0 home victory over Ashton pushed the Nottinghamshire club up to second.

Team news for tomorrow centres on top scorer and creator Lee Ashcroft who limped out of the Bower Fold fray in the 67th minute after giving the bench earlier indications he could play on despite feeling a strain in the opening minutes. Everyone else appeared to come through an excellent end-to-end encounter which in standard and style befitted a Conference clash.

Burr has brought experience into his squad with the signing of ex-Birmingham and Port Vale midfielder Jon McCarthy who transferred to Birmingham for £1m in 1998. Also in Burr's ranks is former England semi-pro international Gary Patterson.

Walsh was delighted left back Paul Byrne has agreed to sign a two year contract with the manager saying: "We see real potential in Paul and he has the same attitude towards the club. We can both move on together."

* Southport Juniors broadcast by Sky will be presented at Goodison Park on Tuesday night with their FA Charter Standard Development Club status award, one of the first in the country, during the half time Under-21s international fixture.

Chairman Nick David-son said: "A tremendous amount of time and develop-ment has gone into this application which is for Southport Juniors and Ladies. Our aim is to coach and develop our boys and girls via the FA Charters philosophy and methodology."

HAIG AVENUE WINS BRONZE
04/09/03
Southport groundsman, Barry Hedley has come third in the 2002/2003 Nationwide Conference Groundsman of the year award for the second consecutive season after finishing behind Conference champions Yeovil Town and Woking.

The Haig Avenue pitch was in superb condition throughout last season and had many admirers, including Everton boss David Moyes who was delighted when Everton reserves secured a three-year contract at Southport. The club have always had a lush playing surface and with no Premiership Reserve games being played on it, the pitch was not bombarded with matches and had plenty of time to recover after games.

However, this season both Everton and Southport reserves play on it as well as the UniBond Premiership first team. Hedley took over as sole groundsman from Ken Morris in 2000 and won the bronze award the season before last, finishing behind winners Doncaster and Woking, again in second place.

The first prize was on by Yeovil groundsman Rod Pippard, after £350,000 was spent on bringing the Huish Park playing surface up to scratch before the season. Town later went on to win the Conference. Second came Michael Bidmead from Woking after maintaining the Kingfield stadium to very high standards.

BYRNE SIGNS 2-YEAR DEAL
02/09/03
Paul Byrne has signed for Southport on a permanent basis after agreeing a 2-year deal with the Haig Avenue club.

Byrne has completed all of the Sandgrounders' opening 5 matches following his switch from Welsh premier League club Barry Town.

The 20-year-old, South African born Byrne will has impressed at Southport after signing on a temporary basis a month and a day ago. He has proved to be a stable player who has featured at left-back but can also play in the mid-field. The former Port Vale man has gelled quickly with his fellow defenders following their summer arrivals after featuring in Europe for the Jenner Park club already this season. Byrne signed at for the Welsh Champions from Port Vale, where he made a number of full Nationwide League appearances. He won the Welsh cup and league double last season. Byrne was one of the full-time professionals at Jenner Park, however, he became available after pay disputes with the Welsh outfit.

'PORT NAMED 'CLUB OF THE MONTH'
01/09/03
Only 3 months after being relegated from the Conference, Southport have picked up the UniBond 'Club of the Month' for August after winning 4 games out of 4, without conceding a goal.

The 'Port just piped top of the table, newly promoted Alfreton Town who are also unbeaten after 5 games.

The UniBond League distribute various awards to clubs in the Premier and First Division, and the Sandgrounders are also on course to win the Sportsnet 'Best Defensive Record' award after keeping clean sheets in all of their opening games.

It is an award which will give the players an early award and will hopefully spur them onto better things. It is an award which will delight all at Haig Avenue, but it's the trophy at the end of the season everyone wants to get their hands on.

In previous times, there have been a presentation on the winner's pitch before the start of a game.
