Why is so little done? The coal, oil & car industry lobbies. The chief problem is the USA government, which has not only not ratified Kyoto , but acted in the opposite direction.
Our government is also tailing the USA on this issue. Economic short-term interests of industry are sacrosanct. A Rational transport policy which would encourage people to use their cars less by providing better and cheaper alternatives, is hampered by the privatisation of public transport. What can we do?1. Pass the resolution for Conference, and get the PCS involved in a policy to combat global warming. 2. Greater Manchester Campaign against Climate Change was formed last Autumn. It is a branch of a national campaign, ( www.CampaignCC.org ) which seeks to pressurise politicians to put climate change at the top of their policy agendas. It's a multi-party organisation, which organises demonstrations and campaigns to get people into action. It needs your support. Last December we organised a day of Climate action. 10,000 people in London demonstrated. More than 25 countries around the world held action on that day. We want to do the same again, (but bigger and better) next November when the Kyoto Nations will be meeting in Nairobi . We need practical support, finance for leaflets & other campaign material.
