The photographs in these galleries were all taken with a Nikon D70 digital SLR and a variety of
Nikon and Sigma lenses.
Most of the images in the Birds and Animals galleries were taken with a Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6
VR lens. A few were taken with a Nikon 70-300mm non-VR zoom and one or two of
the larger and more approachable subjects were taken with the Nikon 18-70mm kit lens that came
with the camera.
Most of the Insects and Spiders were shot with a Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lens and for many of them
I also used the excellent Nikon Creative Lighting System, with a Nikon SB-800 speedlight as the
master and two or three lens mounted SB-R200 speedlights doing the illuminating.
A few of the butterfly shots and dragonfly shots were taken with the Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR
lens.
All images were shot in RAW format and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom was used to render them as jpegs
and to create the gallery pages.
I have been a photographer since I was a teenager and used Nikon film cameras (the
FM and FM2) for many years. I finally switched to digital in May 2005 with the
purchase of a Nikon D70. As well as being my first digital camera this was also
the first camera I ever owned with an autofocus capability.
As you can probably tell my chief interest is in wildlife photography, one of the most difficult
and demanding subjects there is! However, when photographing wild birds and mammals
patience, perseverance and good fieldcraft technique allows me to get within a few feet of my
quarry on occasions. Insects and spiders can often be a bit more approachable but
when working with macro lenses and extension tubes I still have to be very careful not to spook
them.
The digital revolution has had a huge impact on my photography and has encouraged me to try new
approaches and experiment much more.
Some of these experiments are disasters and quickly get deleted, others are much more interesting.
Either way, even after 30 years behind a lens I'm still learning all the time!
