Buffcoat.jpg - 9392 BytesLaura1.jpg - 10487 BytesPa sold his homestead in 1892 and today has become the 'Ingalls Homestead - a living Prairie'. This is a very different kind of museum to all the rest. There are no hallowed possessions behind glass cases to be found here, and you are positively encouraged to take pictures and try things out. I can only begin to describe the displays and activities available. On site there are replicas of many of Laura's homes including a sod house and tar paper lined shanty. Sections of the site have been grown to represent different kinds of terrain associated with Laura Ingalls Wilder. There are fields of oats, corn and wheat, as well as examples of slough and native prairie. There is a school house complete with teacher and costumes for children. There are pony rides and of course a covered wagon ride. Very welcome on a hot day was the hand pump if you have the strength. There is a lot of scope here for many other items in the future and I heartily recommend it for a visit.
