Cause of Death
&
Place of Burial or Commemoration

The place of burial or commemoration of a soldier who died in service can normally be established from the CWGC records, however these records will not give the "cause" or classification of death, information which is important if further investigations are to be made with regard to the events leading to the soldiers death. This can easily be resolved however by checking the man's entry in the HMSO listings of War Dead, - these CWGC and HMSO searches will be made as a matter of course when researching any Officer or Other Ranks who died in service.

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

John McCrae
