DUNGEON QUEST

A classic boardgame we recently pulled out and played again. The (up-to four) players start at separate corners and work their way to the centre of the board, creating the Dungeon as they go by placing random tiles. Along the way you are beset by such problems as traps, rock- falls and monsters. Combat is managed in a simple scissors, paper, stone variant. Once the centre is reached, treasure can be stolen from the dragon, (if it stays asleep) and then you have to try and get out again.

What makes this better than average is that there is a limit to the number of turns in the game. If you don't get out in time, you don't get out at all. A game with new players can take about 1 1/2 hours, with all experienced players it could rattle by in about half that time.

First published in Sweden in the mid-'eighties, this is a game everyone should at least play once.
