MILLER LAU
Interviewed by Cardinal Cox

When I met Miller Lau at the meeting of the Stamford writers Circle she was wearing a very serious hat. She readily admits that she has been writing since she was sixteen and so far the closest she has come to success is when a short story of hers got into the top twelve of the Ian St. James Award.

She confesses that David Gemmell has motivated her with her current novel that is collecting interest from publishers both in Britain and America.

Can you tell us something about your book?

It's an Heroic Fantasy, so there are swords, magic and romance, because I think fantasy readers like some romance in their books. It is set in an alternate past in a very Celtic/Medieval setting. I find that fantasy is the best way of expressing myself. Obviously other writers prefer other genres, detective or what have you. However, I do like science fiction and some horror as well. I've been known to enjoy a good gross out now and again.

How long did it take to write the book?

About three years. I do almost no planning with my writing, letting stories evolve. I'll probably get into trouble for this but I've always found that it is the male writers who methodically plan out their work. When I started almost all I knew about the story was the hero's name and a street name. Apart from that, all I had was the knowledge that it sort of involved my native Scottish folklore.
