12 Corps
                                                  7th Survey Regiment R.A.
Rank: - Major; T/Lt Col 34663
Name:- Hilary Howard Benson CLEGG

Citation :-

During the Operation which culminated in the capture of the Western defences of VENLO, our advance was overlooked by the high ground East of the Meuse, and the said location of hostile batteries was essential to our success.

On 22nd Nov 1944, in the area SE of BAARLON, Lt. Col. CLEGG went forward to carry out a personal reconnaissance for a Sound Ranging Base. He accompanied the leading infantry patrols up to the minefields, and then  began a personal unaccompanied reconnaissance  through the minefields on foot. After finding a safe  route, he went back collected The Troop Commander  and line parties and directed the establishment of a base  which had to be laid across minefields within  200 yards of our forward elements.  The work lasted in all some seven hours, & during most this time Lt. Col Clegg was under direct observation by the enemy who shelled and mortared the area continuously. It was largely due to the early establishment of this base and  its successful maintenance that the enemy artillery in the   VENLO area was effectively neutralised during the subsequent attack.
