12 Corps,
7 Survey Regiment RA
Army No and Rank, 973585 W/Sergeant
Name Norman Marcus ADAMS
On 22 Oct '44 No 973585. W/Sgt. Adams. N.M. owing to the shortage of an
officer, took command of a survey section of X Tp By about 1300 hrs that day 53 Div
infantry had advanced into the heavily mined area West of VINCKEL. Guns
were to follow up in order to take part from closer rangein a further programme that
night. It was therefore essential that survey was provided by nightfall. Despite the fact
that carriers, jeeps and half-trackshad been blown up on mines before his eyes, Sgt Adams
oldly led his section along virgin tracks to a successful accomplishment of the task, of
which the technical difficulties alone were sufficient to make its completion before
darkness a matter of doubt.
Had Sgt Adams taken the more cautious method of reconnoitring and surveying on foot,
daylight would not have allowed the completion of the work and the guns for whose survey
he was responsible could not have taken their pre-arranged part in the fire plan known as
COLIN which followed.
