12 Corps,
7 Survey Regiment RA
Army No and Rank, 9989938 W/Bdr (A/Sgt)
Name Thomas Albert CARTER
On the 8 Nov 44 L/Sgt Carter established a S.Rg Advance Post near OSPEL at
665045. The whole area was under enemy observation and was subjected to heavy and
continuous HF.
On the evening os 11 Nov the coy area in which the AP was situated was the object os
attack by a strong enemy patrol supported by MG and mortar fire. The line to HQ was
severed early in the action but L/Sgt Carter established radio communication, stood-to his
party and maintained his post in action despite the close approach of the enemy who took
several prisoners from the coy area. Throughout the period that his AP remained in this
position, from 8 to 18 Nov '44, L/Sgt Carter's courage and determination in securing
hostile battery locations were outstanding. These locations were essential to the C.B.
build up for the operations to clear the WEERT/DUERNE canals.
His cheerful disregard of danger, his personal leadership and untiring devotion to duty
were an inspiration to his men and kept them in god heart throughout an extremely arduous
action.
