Name MARGERISON    CHARLES EDGAR

Sgt. Margerison was in command of a Flash Spotting post in NULANDS VINCKEL Church (429476). This pst was in no mans land and a small infantry escort had been provided. At 0205 hrs on 3 Oct 44, the post and its escort numbering in all some 25 all ranks, was attacked by about a company of enemy whose object was the destruction of the church spire. Sgt Margerison ordered his post to man their section of the  perimeter which happened to be the point chosen for attack. For 45 minutes Sgt. Margerison and his 12 men engaged the enemy at close quarters with bren, rifles and sten guns. Although the post  was outnumbered many time, Sgt. Margerison held them together and rush after rush was halted and  scattered with heavy losses to the enemy. It was only when the enemy sappers had succeded in penetrating to the church  and blowing it up that Sgt. Margerison, both his vehicles burnt behind him, decided to withdraw his post through the escort. Thanks to his resolute leadershipSgt Margerison extracted a heavy penalty   from the enemy and undoubtedly saved his entire post from death or capture.
