GENERAL IDEA
A German force has landed at WESTON-SUPER-MARE
and has pushed
forward in a N. Easterly direction - it's objectives being to seize the port of AVONMOUTH
and cut the main G.W.R. line BRISTOL - LONDON - in the first instance. The towns of
BRISTOL and BATH are tank islands and fully defended localities, whose perimeter is the
outer edges of their "built-up" areas.
SPECIAL IDEA
The attack on AVONMOUTH was partially successful and the port was temporarily out of
action. A column of enemy drove in between BATH and BRISTOL, crossing the RIVER AVON at
first light 31.7.41. 20 Corps (2 divisions up and one I reserve) were in touch, and at
0800 hrs the position was as follows : -

20 Corps 10 Div.excl: RODFORD _ OLD SODBURY 2002 incl: PT 628 192995.
11 Div. PT. 628 excl; - HINTON HILL 1897 - X rds 175934.
The BATH Garrison & Reserves were known to hold HENLEY HILL 1992 & CHARMY DOWN (2090) and SOLSBURY HILL (2188) features, but the position here was obscure.
12 Div. with 202
Med Regt (Corps arty) and Comp: bty 7th Survey
