12 Corps
                                         7th Survey Regiment R.A.

Rank : -  (W/Bdr) PA/L/Sgt 998783 (RA)
Name : - Stewart Jones

L/Sgt Jones was in command of a Sound Ranging Advance Post sited to the North East of XANTEN during the build up phase before the crossing of the RHINE. His position happened to be approximately at the centre of the main weight of enemy shelling at the important road junction North East of the town.

On the evening of the 20th March about 30 heavy shells, over a period, fell within 100yds of the post, splinters frequently striking the posts' embrasures. Other shells dropped continuously along the posts' line route running. South Westwards towards XANTEN. The line was continuously cut and, owing to the usual evening interference, wireless would not work properly. L/Sgt Jones on each occasion that his line failed, walked out into the shelling to repair it, although he might well have remained in comparative safety relying on his somewhat indifferent wireless communications, the two batteries causing the  trouble were located - to be faithfully dealt with three nights latter in the counter - battery programme prior to the assault.
